Actually from a young age, in my 20's - owe that to my mom who refuses to age. But I religiously started practicing in my late 30's and the results have been phenomenal! When people think you are your daughter's elder sister - however cliched it sounds, you know you are doing something right.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
I am a Masters of Science in Biotechnology and have dabbled in many careers in the past. Worked in a pharmaceutical company, taught in a school, been an education counselor, and even a dog trainer + tarot card, reader. Yes, I was quite a gypsy soul.
But once I hit my 30's I was hit with the worst bout of Acid Reflux. Anything I ate whether acidic or alkaline would trigger my reflux and even give me migraines. I became scared of food and then I realized that it was my poor lifestyle choices in the past, which have developed into a health condition.
That's when I decided to delve deep into nutrition because exercise has been an integral part of my life. I started practicing yoga at the age of 12 and there was no looking back, so the only thing that I was missing in my life was a Proper Diet! That's when the journey of Nutrition began.
2. When and how did you decide to become a nutritionist?
6 years ago, my husband got diagnosed with IBS, and this is when I had sorted my own acidity and acid reflux issues minus the use of medicines. Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food - is my simple ideology in life. But medical issues like Gerd and IBS are something I knew nothing about. It was so disheartening when my husband visited so many qualified and skilled doctors, but the medicines were only suppresing the problem - not curing it.
That is when I dove deep into actually studying this digestive condition. I joined support groups to help him and realized there was one thing in common - everyone was taking the same drugs but no one was getting better. It became my mission to cure my husband and after weeks of research and 100's of medical articles later - that I came up with a meal plan for him.
Eliminated things he loved, added things he didn't love so much, and maintained a food journal for him to see the triggers. Not only did it work, it pretty much reversed it. And no it just wasn't the Food, it was a combination of food, exercise, meditation, affirmations and so much more.
That's when it struck me - people don't know what to eat, how to eat (food combinations), and when to eat. I started helping my friends and family with small medical conditions like indigestion, bloating, etc and even more major stuff like Type 2 Diabetes.
The results were amazing and it felt soo good helping them - hence I decided to get certified and share people make small sustainable changes in their lifestyle which can have such a profound effect on the overall health.
3. What is your mantra to stay fit and healthy?
Patience & Consistency is the most important Mantra. Be kind to yourself and don't expect changes to show overnight. No fad diets. Eat local and seasonal!
Lastly, there is no such thing as a bad workout - keep moving and stay active. Hydrate but don't burden the kidneys Less Salt and Less Sugar
You don't need to be rewarded with itfood! Rested Sleep!
4. When did you start doing face yoga and what changes did you experience?
Actually from a young age, in my 20's - owe that to my mom who refuses to age. But I religiously started practicing in my late 30's and the results have been phenomenal! When people think you are your daughter's elder sister - however cliched it sounds, you know you are doing something right.
I don't have any deep-seated wrinkles, a good even skin tone - which is great because I'm not a fan of makeup and I love the fact that my skincare products are less than 5! Glowing skin is always in!
5. Who do you admire the most and why?
She worked alongside her husband and other women, to abolish caste and gender discrimination. She also set up the 'Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha' to prevent female infanticide, and campaigned against the killing of widows and pregnant rape victims.
6. What tips and advice would you give to maintain a proper diet and health?
No fad diets, please. Eat seasonally and eat local. Small sustainable lifestyle changes. Exercise regularly - even if it's a brisk walk. Set realistic goals and work towards them.
No foods are bad unless you have a particular medical condition. Don't ever compare yourself to others! Learn to love yourself - and everything else will follow smoothly. Develop a healthy relationship with your food and practice mindful eating. Take time off from technology and just be you.
7. Which is your favorite book and why?
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. It's about love, friendship, imagination, nature, being wild and free while also addressing issues like bullying and how to cope with it.
I can go on and on about this book and why I love it. Better you give it a go, and if you aren't a reader then do watch the movie. You can thank me later!
