Web Series Review: ‘Death Note’ - Power of the Gods

Imagine if you get a power where you can kill anybody in any way, you can determine the time of their death, the way they are gonna die and there is just no end to the people you can kill just by writing their name in a certain notebook.

Feels like power right, who will you kill then? probably the school bully that you always wanted to get back at, cause no way anyone will know it's you and then maybe, in those lines of thoughts you will feel like using it to kill bad people. Cause such is the power, and that's what you see in death note. The story line is so relatable to what  would you do if I had the power and thus make this series admirable.

Death from the Sky

To tell you why this story happens, it was because a certain lord of death, also called the ‘Shinigami’ Ryuk, was bored. He was bored to see other Shinigami’s meaninglessly killing humans and he found humans interesting, something that won't bore him because of their emotions and norms and how they go through life.

So, that bored Shinigami drops his death note, the way he kills other humans in the human world, where it is founded by another bored kid. That kid's name is Light Yagami. Light is one thing that you say is genius in all fields.

He knows more than his teachers, ace every test, is good at sports, and one of the smartest, but he also feels monotonous and on finding a death note, he believes to change something.

The series centers around Light's subsequent attempts to use the Death Note to carry out a worldwide massacre of individuals whom he deems immoral and to create a crime-free society.

Season Review

Death Note is a single season with 37 episodes written by Tsugumi Ohba and telecasted in October 2006 by Madhouse Studios. The season begins with Ryuk dropping his death note in the human world and is founded by a genius Light Yagami.

Death Note grants the user the supernatural ability to kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. Light believes that this power must be used for a greater purpose and he decides to kill everyone who he thinks is a criminal and wants to create a world free of injustice.

Light begins killing people and starts writing their names he sees on the news, internet after testing the death note a couple of times, he takes on the alias of ‘Kira’ and becomes a god-like vigilante. After operating unhinged, a detective that goes by ‘L’ tricks Kira and reveals his location, and challenges him on TV to catch him.

The series then progresses with two great minds L and Kira, who are considered as Anime’s most intelligent characters, going against each other with each using tricks to get the other one to make mistakes.

We later see ‘M’ and ‘Mellow’ who considered L as their mentor and how they contribute to their case. The ending is satisfying and you enjoy the story to an extent.

Character’s You'll Love

1. Light Yagami - He is the protagonist of the story who is a genius high school student. He finds a death note lying around and decides to use his power to remove all evil from the earth.

He kills criminals all over the world and considers himself Justice. He is one of the smartest anime protagonists and his character development will be most interesting to watch. He is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa.

2. L - Yes, that's it, that's the name L. L is the person who takes on Kira's case as he is the world no.1 detective. He determines to catch Kira without knowing his powers yet he determines that he needs a name and a face to kill and he figures a lot without knowing the supernatural aspect which just shows his intelligence.

His IQ is equal to Light and is the proper opponent of his. He is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi.

3. Misa Amane - She is a popular pop actress and girlfriend of Light Yagami. She also knows about Light’s secret and makes a deal with Shinigami for Light. Although she loves him, Light considers her as a tool for his plan and manipulates her. She shows bare character development until the end and is voiced by Aya Hirano.

The Bottom Line

Although the ending of the death note is considered unsatisfactory and a bit confusing, that doesn't stop it from being called a masterpiece. It is one of the first for any anime beginners and hooks you to watch many series like this, thus much recommended and worth watching. You can stream it on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
