Anuj Agrawal - In My Heart, I Always Knew I Wanted to Be an Entrepreneur (Founder - Zyoin)

Being at the top of the organization or running a business is often a lonely place to be, keeping oneself motivated and ever-evolving is the most important thing to do. I always try to be better than yesterday and believe that every problem has a solution so one should never give up.

Tell us about your background, journey, and upbringing.

I was born as the youngest child of a middle-class family. My initial years were spent in a small town named Bhilai, which is well known for its Steel Plant.

After my schooling in Bhilai, I chose to pursue my further education in the engineering field from one of the prestigious Engineering Institutes of the country known as the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka.

I moved to Bangalore in the year 2003, right after my graduation. Here I got exposed to the fast-growing IT field, a growth that was fuelled by recruiting human resources in large numbers. It was easy to see Hiring was the primary driving force and differentiator amongst all IT-based organization.

All this action happening around the IT field led me to choose Recruitment as the line of business; as I believed I could create long-term value and by solving the biggest challenge for all organizations.

When and how did you get clarity on what you wanted to do?

In my heart, I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, I had seen people in my hometown doing well for themselves by building businesses around challenges faced by steel plants and people of the town.

While I was in Bangalore I saw many organizations were setting up offices, they intended to build software products from India, due to the cost advantage and enormous engineering talent our country offered.
The challenge they had was the pool that could such work in India was limited, besides this pool was not aware of such exciting opportunities. I thought I could bridge this gap and hence I started Zyoin.

Studies today show that an organization can lose INR 10 lakh (~ $17,000) on average on a wrong hire or for hiring someone with a false degree. The only tried and tested way to prevent frauds is via a thorough background verification process. What does your typical workday look like?

I like to get started early every day, I am someone who wakes up at 5 am and sleeps by 10 pm, even on weekends. I usually like to keep my schedule very organized and similar every day, I start my day by reading news or a book of my choice for 30 mins, followed by 60-90 mins of workout followed by a shower and getting ready for work and having a filling breakfast.

While most of my team gets started by 10 am, I usually start my work at 9 am, so that I am all set and ready to go before everyone else. Most of my day goes in working closely with my team members while solving day-to-day challenges and meeting customers to understand their needs. I do keep 1-2 hours spare for me to think back, plan and strategize the future course of Zyoin.

Several global companies have come out and thrown their support behind not needing a formal education. What is your opinion about this?

While the world is developed for these global companies, our country is still a developing one and thus formal education plays a vital role in setting the roadmap and stepping stone for most individuals.

Besides this, learning is indeed more important than education, but the base for all learnings is developed through formal education and the ecosystem surrounding it.

How do you handle someone who has lied on their resume?

In our country, people always write and show more than they know. So rather than trying to focus on what they have written, I usually focus on what they have done.

Although I don't appreciate providing misinformation concerning education or employment and I also find it unethical and something we should not entertain.

What are some of your typical challenges and, how have they evolved with time?

My initial challenge was doing everything on my own without any support from anyone. Then the challenge shifted to hiring and making team members to learn-unlearn and grow fast while building long and fruitful customer relationships.

This challenge has now shifted to scaling up, setting up process, being data-driven while staying relevant as we have been running Zyoin for over 15 years.
