Gender equality is still a dream goal for many industries and fashion is no exception, with men acquiring top roles across all areas of business. It is hard to believe for an industry where women make the majority consumer base. The industry is still dominated by men in all the major roles.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
As a child, I always dreamt of being fashionable. Pursuing a career in fashion was not an easy journey for me as I come from a small city. I’ve been born and brought up in Lucknow. In 2014, I decided to move to Delhi to pursue my dream. It was tough to convince my parents that this is the right career path for me because I was myself not much aware of what the future has in store for me.
My passion and desire to be in fashion made me go against all the people who were not in support of my dream. People around me judged my choice and looked down upon me but my firing attitude towards my dream never let it hinder my goal. I’m glad my parents supported me throughout this process and believed in my vision when everyone else backed out.
2. Fashion industry is often considered women-centric and stereotypes men? What's your opinion?
According to my opinion, it’s vice versa. The industry is more male-centric and is thought to be female-centric as a career option. Gender equality is still a dream goal for many industries and fashion is no exception, with men acquiring top roles across all areas of business. It is hard to believe for an industry where women make the majority consumer base. The industry is still dominated by men in all the major roles.
Despite the recent trend for gender neutrality on the catwalk, behind the scenes female talent is still outnumbered. To me, there are more male designers designing for female than there are female in the industry
