I believe DJing is a great hobby to have. Making people dance to your tunes is something everyone desires.
However, to have a financially stable career in this field - you need to be really good at the skill, do something extremely unique to set you apart from the other DJ’s, and have great people skills - reading the crowd, accepting their requests and understanding what they want as well as judging what they will want after a few minutes.
Tell us about your background and journey.
I’ve been a dancer since the age of 4. I trained with the Shiamak Davar Dance Company for over 15 years. Music has always been a part of me. My parents would take me to all Bollywood movies ever since I was a child and encourage me to come home and dance to all the new songs! When I was giving my 10th Board Exam, I started making non-stop mixes on my iPad. The entire concept of hearing many songs back to back without a break was new to many of my friends.
Thus, I started uploading these 10-minute mixes on Facebook and received a lot of love from them. After my exams, I went to Germany to attend summer school. Over there, they added me as a friend on Facebook and that led them to discover these mixes I had made.
They went absolutely crazy and would play them all over the campus. They invited me to perform at one of their college events and I had absolutely no idea how to DJ then but I acted cool and said yeah I’ll perform for you guys. I ended up playing all my mixes back to back. This showed me a different side of music. Seeing all of them love my music so much made me want to come back and learn the skill.
I instantly took up training and the rest is history! In 2020, I decided to take a step forward with my career by doing something never done before. I have been a dancer since a young age and a DJ since 2015. DJing gave me happiness and in dancing, I found my freedom.
I decided to join my passions of dance and DJing to create an experience that no one had seen before - ' #TheDancingDJ ' Through this concept, I became India's First Live Performer to incorporate the fusion of dance & DJing in my live sets. Combining my passions was a dream come true for me and I finally found my space in the Music Industry that I wanted to create my presence within. #TheDancingDJ has become my identity.
Is DJ'ing a mainstream and financially stable career in India yet?
I believe DJing is a great hobby to have. Making people dance to your tunes is something everyone desires.
However, to have a financially stable career in this field - you need to be really good at the skill, do something extremely unique to set you apart from the other DJ’s, and have great people skills - reading the crowd, accepting their requests and understanding what they want as well as judging what they will want after a few minutes.
Together, you can be a complete package that entertains any and every crowd in front of you.
Who is your favourite artist and why?
I personally do not have a “favourite” artist. I feel all artists are unique and different in their own ways. There’s a right time for each artist. However, I really admire and look up to Lost Stories.
They’re one of India’s best producers and I also learnt my music production skills from their academy. The way they bring in Indian sounds to their music is something I’ve always looked up to and tried to incorporate in my music style too!
What are some of the common myths about your profession?
There are plenty, the most common being “you drink every night” - I don’t. I never consume alcohol during my performances, I find it extremely unprofessional.
My job is to make people drink more so I’d rather focus on playing music that will make them want to enjoy it more!
What are the kind of opportunities you get after being a DJ?
Every DJ has their own journey. Each one wants different things. Some may want to just perform at one club while some may want to tour around the world! It takes me back to the 2nd question - if you have the right skills and you’re ready to make the sacrifices it takes - the world will be at your feet!
What inspired you in the 1st place to choose this as a career?
I decided to take a step forward with my career by doing something never done before.
Along with my dancers, I shot multiple music videos to bring out the concept and finally got an opportunity to do two grand shows in Mumbai's most premium venues - Escobar and Tryst.
The power-packed shows at Tryst and Escobar were a tremendous success with dazzling performances, along with sensational Bollywood music. To compliment my energy, there was SFX in the form of confetti, high-end production and energetic dhol's making the event a grand success. Combining my passions was a dream come true for me and I finally found my space in the Music Industry that I wanted to create my presence within. #TheDancingDJ has become my identity.
