Tanya Appachu - To Make People Aware and Empowered Is the Intent of My Page (Lawyer from India)

Tanya Appachu

Over the years and also from personal experience of being a child of divorce, I understand that legal rights in India are a much-ignored topic, especially with women. They are often gullible when it comes to their legal rights. Even the most existed and well to do women were unaware of their rights. I felt the need to create something that people would connect with and also find interesting whilst understand the laws.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I come from a beautiful hill station called Coorg in Karnataka. My mother is a single parent and my father is an advocate, although never present in our lives. Unfortunately, I got into law for all the wrong reasons. I think it was some naive way of proving to my father I could be one too.

But after getting into law and a little with age my perspective changed. I genuinely liked the subjects and found them very fascinating. And I truly believe when you enjoy a particular subject you will excel in it. I started my career as a tax consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Mumbai. Since then I’ve worked as an English Teacher and also worked in the Jodhpur High Court.

My career has been a roller coaster because of my husband’s transferable job. But I believe that as long as it is an opportunity to learn, earn and grow as a person, there should be no reason to box yourself to one career choice and change it according to circumstances in your life.

Infotainment was accepted well on the Instagram platform and reels were doing well at the time I started. So I jumped in and took that opportunity. Currently, I’m creating content regarding women’s rights and laws on Instagram and also online consult with clients on family matters.

2. What do you think are the key differences in studying law in Indian and other countries?

Studying abroad helps develop a broader perspective of law as a discipline. It also gives you great international career options more specialisations as opposed to studying in India.

They have a more practical approach to studying that can definitely increase your horizons. Also, nothing can beat the experiences of living abroad and networking with people from around the world.

3. Which top institutes would you recommend for studying law?

The best options would be the National Law Schools. I would also recommend ILS Pune, GLC Mumbai, DU University, BHU they are a little old school but has stood the test of time and has great alumni. Some other good options are OP Jindal Law School and Christ Bangalore.

4. What advice would you pass on to someone who wants to be a lawyer?

It is a great, noble and well-respected profession with a lot of diverse career options. So make the most of law school. Do focus on your academic record because that is what they usually judge you on when u are looking for a job straight out of college or trying for an LLM.

Join the clubs and courses that interest you in college. They always help you grow and learn. Read read read. That is how you develop your research skills which are a very underrated but most important skill a lawyer needs.

5. What are the various career scopes after being a lawyer?

Like I said earlier law has very diverse options. One can choose to litigate or be a corporate lawyer, Human rights or  UPSC is also a chosen option for many after law. There are so many subjects to choose from like taxation, Intellectual Property, International Law, Family Laws, Property, Immigration, the list is quite extensive.

6. What does success look like to you in this job?

Just the other day a lady messaged me saying that after watching my videos she summoned the guts to stand up to an abuser in her family who had been sexually abusing her for years.

And she finally went a filed a police complaint. It might sound small but that to me is a big win. To be able to affect peoples lives in any tiny way. To make people aware and empowered is the intent of my page and if I achieve that it is a success for me.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

I have a number of favourite books.

A few of my favourites are
- Notorious RBG: the life and times of Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

- We should all Be feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. A great read because we have such a distorted version of feminism in our heads.

- Bourne series by Robert Ludlum. I love spy thrillers and can re-read all the books in the series many times over and again in my life.
