Mohammad Ishfaque Kamal - Live Gigs Give You Access to a Smaller Crowd in Exchange for Amazing Interactions With People (Comedian From Bangladesh)

A digital form of media has a different kind of fun as I get to reach a lot of people but most importantly a lot of jokes and tricks can only be pulled off through video mostly when dealing with slapstick comedy. However, on the contrary, live gigs might give you access to a smaller crowd but in exchange for amazing interactions with the people, you are performing for.

A constant feeling of thrill surges through your body for each second you spend on the stage which I believe cannot be compared with any other sort of platform. so in conclusion, like every parent, I might say " I love them equally" for the sake of saying it. However, while explaining why one can deduct which kid is loved the most.

Tell us about your background & journey.

I am a Barrister from the Honourable Society of Lincolns Inn ( yet to be called) currently doing my LLM and I am from Bangladesh. However, people mostly know me through my work in Media and Stand-Up comedy. For me, comedy was rather an escape rather than a profession in a sense. In other words, it is such a passion that I had the luck to earn a bit of side cash through.

I am using the term "luck" because, in a country like Bangladesh, you might earn money as a content creator but really hard or next to impossible to earn as a Stand-Up Comedian. So prefer to treat this as a side income or "income" but mostly escape from the mundane of a reality we call life.

What type of content do you enjoy producing the most and is the most challenging?

I love to be edgy and push things to the utmost limit if possible. I tend to not give that much to the social limitation to a lot of things which, to be honest act as a double-edged sword. For such reason, a lot of brands are hesitant to approach me. I mean my page is called "Fake my life", do I need to elaborate? However, nothing has ever stopped me from expressing my views and expressing my individuality. The most challenging part piggybacks from the previous statement as my style of comedy does not cater to a lot of the people mostly the ones who try to portray the crystal clear saint-like image of the society.

It is definitely challenging at times to find the middle ground between the two. As I mentioned before, whatever I create or say, is for me as it gives me happiness. I believe as long as I am not hurting anyone's sentiments or beliefs, I will keep on making videos the way I want them to be rather worrying about what my distant aunt, uncle, cousin would say.

Do you prefer digital as a medium or do you enjoy doing live gigs more and why?

This question reminds me of the time where a parent is asked "which of her kids she love the most? ".

People, who are interested in taking up stand-up comedy as a profession, do need a funny bone or they can develop one?

The thing about stand-up that most people miss is that when you hear a comedian crack a joke, it is not like it was funny when it was written for the first time. Every joke has a journey and it takes a lot of attempt and refining to make a joke good. In other words, a lot of effort. Now that being said, I believe it takes a bit of both to be good at Stand-Up if you have a funny bone, less effort in refining the joke. If not, more effort is required.

The biggest problem a comedian faces currently faces in Bangladesh is the lack of a platform to "refine" a joke. Thus contributing to the main problem of not having many good jokes by the comedians. (I am speaking about myself, to be honest).
I believe with rising in content creators in Bangladesh and the number of people that had approached me with interest stand-up, I believe there could be a change in the scene.

What impact do you want to make in this world?

I personally feel in the current times, the pandemic has taken a huge toll on everyone's mental health. People look for an escape from all the bad news they receive every day. This is where comedy plays a big role, the distraction from the regularity which is something definitely not pleasant.

On a personal note, I would like to add the fact that while making content most people often lose their individuality in the process. May be for money or just the social pressure of society. I believe, with my attitude and my content show the future content creators that it is ok to be you, it is ok to express what you feel rather worried about what others would say.
