Nikita Dsouza - You Can Practice Mindfulness at Every Moment of Your Waking Hour (Clinical Psychologist, India)

Clinical Psychologist,
Indlas Child Guidance Clinic (ICGC) Mumbai

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Academically, I completed my post-graduation in the year 2014, in Clinical Psychology from SNDT Women’s University, Churchgate, Mumbai. I have pursued many other additional courses post this and am still pursuing them. I believe in the saying “The Quest for Knowledge should never cease”.

Since 2014, I’ve been working in the field of mental health. I have been associated with my current workplace, INDLAS CHILD GUIDANCE CLINIC (ICGC), Mumbai, since April 2015. This professional journey has been immensely rewarding, where I cater to the mental health of children, teenagers and young adults. I work with children and teenagers with Autism, ADHD, emotional issues, academic issues, etc; and with young adults with various issues.

2. What led you to take up this career path?

Personally, I have had a rough past – a rough childhood. I wasn’t even aware of a subject called psychology until I reached the 10th Grade! Something struck me when I was explained that psychology as a field exists and it could be one’s career.

It was then, at that time, that I decided to take up Psychology as a subject during Junior college and see how it goes. And the Viola, here I am today as a mental health professional!

3. What are some common myths in society about psychology?

About Psychology – many! About Psychologists – Many again! Some common ones would be:
  • Only mad people go to mental health professionals
  • Children can’t have psychological issues
  • Time will make the child or person well
  • Psychologists are mind-readers, hence we should stay away or ask them to read our minds

4. How can people practice mindfulness?

Mindfulness is basically staying in the present. You can practice mindfulness at every moment of your waking hour. Mindful eating for example can be practised where you’re eating without any other distraction like the TV or the mobile. How many of us actually do this? Enjoy or notice every nibble or bite that you take. Feel each texture in your mouth. And so on.

5. What are your tips for people who want to practice this profession?

If you are really interested in the field, get into it, it is rewarding! You will have to brush up on your skills every now and then, be prepared for it.

6. Is work-life balance a myth or reality according to you?

It is a reality. One needs to balance work and life (personal). If not done, there could be issues.

7. How according to you can one manage stress?

So many things could be done to manage stress.
  • Identify what exactly is causing it
  • Prioritize accordingly
  • Chalk out a plan
  • Keep time for self / leisure / me-time
  • Socialize/talk to your loved ones/friends
