Ravish - From 2011, I Started Getting Popular Outside India Due To My Remixes, Which I Post Them Online, I Got Various International Offers From Qatar & Russia (DJ, India)

Biggest myth is that people treat DJ as drug addicts or alcohol addicts. There is a common mentality of people that for DJ’ing these things are necessary or once you get into this profession these drugs and alcohol becomes an important part of their life so it’s not true

1. Tell us about your background and journey?

I belong to a middle class Brahmin family, my dad is a chemist and my mother is a homemaker. I am the youngest of the three siblings, I have an elder brother and an elder sister. I was born in Assam and bought up in Jaipur. I have done all my studies and everything from Jaipur and I am an MBA graduate in financial marketing.

After that, right after my 12the class infact I started DJ’ing for more than three four years I believe during my graduation and post graduation so that’s five years I was managing my DJ’ing and my studies simultaneously and after my MBA was completed I got 100 percent into DJ’ing and I told my parents this is what I wanted to, this is what my passion is and let me continue, so they were okay with it but the only condition they gave me when I started DJ’ing after 12th is that I should never leave my studies in between, so I fulfilled that.

I was very good in studies and was a meritorious student always the class topper so I completed my studies started managing DJ’ing and studies simultaneously.

My journey started right after class 12th and its been 16 years now. I started working under a sound winder here in Jaipur only so I used to do all sorts of event like birthday parties, kitty parties, weddings. So these are the ways I learn and working under sound winders help me to learn more and I gain experience then I started making my own remixes at home and gradually I got to know more about it.

So then I got an offer in Jaipur from a small pub as a DJ and then another offer came from a night club here in Jaipur as one of the senior DJ took me under his umbrella and that’s how my clubbing scene started.

In 2011, I was getting popular outside the Jaipur due to my remixes as I post them online ao thus following year I got an international offer from Doha, Qatar and one month after that I got my second international event in Russia at St. Petersburg so that’s how I got fame in and outside my country India. The things started rolling for me after that.

2. What is the best thing about being a DJ?

The best thing about being a DJ is to bring smile. When people enjoy your music, They dance on it they smile and enjoy. You are entertaining people on your music. You have got the opportunity to bring smile on people’s faces is the fantastic thing and I love doing that .

3. Is DJ’ing a mainstream and financially stable career in India yet?

I won’t say it’s a mainstream profession as of now because still in India majority of people don’t understand what DJ is and what he does. People still have the notion that big speakers are called DJs.

All the person from orchestra or the band members ate called DJs so my extended family who don’t know me and don’t understand my profession they think I am a part of any band or orchestra and I go somewhere perform with instrument so these are some misconception about this field as people do not realize. So definitely it’s not a mainstream profession as I have faced this many a times.

Whenever I go to open a bank account and they ask me to fill the professional details about my occupation and I write DJ, they don’t understand it as they don’t treat it as a profession because people still believe it as a casual hobby. The question usually put up on my face is what is my main occupation beside my hobby as a DJ.

Where am I working or am I working as a salaried employed somewhere or do I have a business of my own. So this is something I believe every DJ in India has faced. Frankly it’s not a mainstream profession.

Second part about financial stability, yes it can be a financially stable profession for you provided you have your good name and have performed good shows. There are lot of DJs in India, the market is full of them but not everybody makes it to the top.

That’s the bitter fact. There are lot of dancers, singers in the Bollywood industry similarly there are lot of DJ but not everyone get the chance to taste success.

So important is if you have good name and have done quite a good amount of shows then you can have a better profit. And then the more shows you do the more rewarding it will be. Apart from that you also get perks to travel different countries, interacting with new crowd every time. So these benefits are very nice.

4. Who is your favorite artist and why?

You can get inspiration from everyone and that’s always been my moto in life so every artist is my favorite and I try to learn from every artist. Some DJ are very good in micking, some are good in mixing, some DJ carry themselves very well their dressing and grooming sense.

Nowadays DJ’ing is a complete package. It’s not just limited to making music and remixing, you have to look good, your communication skills must be good, your micking skills should be perfect. Everybody has their own quality and USP so I try to learn new things from everyone.

5. What are some of the common myth about your profession?

Biggest myth is that people treat DJ as drug addicts or alcohol addicts. There is a common mentality of people that for DJ’ing these things are necessary or once you get into this profession these drugs and alcohol becomes an important part of their life so it’s not true as I know a lot of the DJs who don’t drink at all or anything personally I don’t know any DJ who are involved in drugs and drinking yes a lot of us do but it’s not like we are addicts of it and it’s not at all mandatory things to be a DJ so that is a very common myth people or especially parents have it for their child who dream in to be a DJ they are afraid of it that once My kid will get into this profession he will also become an addict and will involve himself into some bad company but thus is all wrong.

The only requirement to be a DJ is the love for music rest everything is upto that person if he/she wants to so it or not. So it’s my personal opinion other people may differ from it because I have faced many of these things.

6. How and from where can one gain the formal training for being a DJ?

Well now it is very easy to become a DJ because there are lot of Institutions that came up with the full course in DJ. All the big cities have Institute which offer studying DJ and now even the B-town cities have DJ school and institutions and academy.

There are a lot of senior DJs who offer classes to young guys so now it has actually became easy to be a Disc jockey. Secondly technology is evolving so earlier we have to carry wires and CDs now it has come up to pen drives and digital software.

These software has helped us a lot as now if you are smart enough you can go to YouTube and learn any computer software from there, you don’t need any institute to learn, if you have that kind of patience then you can learn anything from the available resources.

7. Your message for people who want to make their passion their profession?

I know some people who wants to be a DJ and I always tell them that enter this field only if you are passionate and only if you love music. There are lot of other factor also people try to get into this field for quick fame for quick money but that’s not how things work.

There is lot of struggle and lot of hard work and if you are passionate about your music and you are true to yourself, you can give your 100 percent hard work, you can struggle for lot of years then only you can make it to the top first in your city and then in the outer market. So it requires a lot of hardwork, lot of struggle and patience.

There are youngsters who want to become a DJ because it’s a very cool profession but it is cool from the outside only. They have this understanding that we we will get quick money from here, will get quick fame and become a popular guy in the school or college so that’s a very wrong method or the idea to get into this profession. My advice only get into this profession if you are passionate of not then leave it.

8. What does success looks like to you in this position and how do you measure it?

For me success is a once you reach a certain position and your fans have given you that position, you have the responsibility to first hold that position and second to work harder to get into a more better position something higher than that.

So for me responsibility once you start doing a lot of shows and there are lot of fans coming to your shows or votes about your remixes, when we post it on YouTube, people are watching and you are getting more views then now you have to work harder, now you have to do better music, now you have to do something new in your shows so that you give something new to your fans in return they will give you love.

That’s your responsibility you have to entertain them because they are spending their money on you and you are getting paid by that. This is what success means to me.

I measure it by the love of my fans as earlier when I post something on YouTube channel there were 100k views now it get million of views so I am getting popular and my fans are making me popular so now I have to produce better music better than earlier one or I have to hold onto that fort so that I can keep my fans interested in me.

The love, the comments and whenever I go to the shows there are people who comes from far away places just to enjoy my concerts and there are instances where some of my fans waited outside my hotel for three four hours just to meet me or to have a picture with me so all these things, the love my fans sgow me is my measuring stick and I always want to satisfy my fans. Those are the people who made me and without them am nothing.
