Shradha Thakur - I Started Writing Very Young but Got Into It Professionally Only During My Post-Graduation (Content Expert at Careers 360)

I was an imaginative child. Creating characters, and mimicking people was my all-time job within the family. I was told by my friends that I am a good storyteller. I started writing very young but got into it professionally only during my post-graduation.

I wrote radio scripts, TV news pieces, packages and did voice-overs during the time with a news channel in Noida.

Tell us about your background & journey.

I come from a small town called Hamirpur, in Himachal Pradesh, where perpetually it has been fed to the adolescent minds that engineering and medicine after high school were the only justified options. I did my 11th and 12th in the medical stream and then decided to take humanity for my graduation.

During those years I realized that I want to be into communications and opted for a Master in Journalism and mass communications. I believe in thriving through time and blooming wherever I am in life. Thus I still have a long way to go before I can consider myself successful.

When did you decide that you want to create content professionally?

I was an imaginative child. Creating characters, and mimicking people was my all-time job within the family. I was told by my friends that I am a good storyteller. I started writing very young but got into it professionally only during my post-graduation. I wrote radio scripts, TV news pieces, packages and did voice-overs during the time, and while on my internship with a news channel in Film City, Noida.

Now, I am working in the field of content and have multiple blogs published under my name which is just the beginning of what I aspire to be.

What all should a person look for while choosing a college?

It is good to aspire to a choice of college but never make that your only target. I have seen many of my acquaintances being shattered after not getting the college of their choice.

Even I was one of them. Later I understood the fact that college is nothing but a mode to reach your goal. Look for a college that offers experiences rather than an entitled degree.

Tell us about your views on the quality of higher education in India?

I believe higher education must be a perfect balance of classroom and practical studies. Students must be encouraged to pick their careers as per their interests and not because of what’s in trend.

Education and career are like fashion, go for sustainability instead of fads. Dependency on marks and cut-offs is not something I believe in.

Share some tips for college placement drives especially for freshers.

As a first placement, you may or may not get your dream job. That doesn’t mean you are not gonna get it. You will learn to pave your way. If you get a chance to work in a small company, don’t be reluctant. You will learn more than anywhere else.

Which is your favorite book & why?

I love all of Ruskin Bond's books. They are simple yet so charismatic. Budding writers can learn to churn captivating stories out of mundane lives from Ruskin Bond’s style of writing. The Kite Runner, by Khalid Hosseini is also very close to my heart.
