The best thing I’ve learned from traveling is to be more open-minded and patient. Delayed flights, people not showing up and things breaking down are things I routinely encounter.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
I started my travel blog in 2009. It was really very much a hobby from the beginning. Initially, I documented my trips from the first-person point of view. Later on, I focused more on guides in order to make my content relevant to a wider audience.
2. Describe your writing process, from concept to publishing. How do you stay motivated?
I read a lot. I check out what’s happening with current events. That is how I get my ideas for content. I stayed motivated in the same way when I started back in 2009. I simply like sharing information to others and that alone motivates me.
3. How do you manage time to run your blog efficiently?
I can’t say that I run it efficiently. It’s a hobby for me so I run it at my own pace. It is not a job.
4. What's the best piece of travel advice you've received?
Not to believe everything I hear or read from mainstream media.
5. What's the most interesting thing you've learnt from travelling?
The best thing I’ve learned from traveling is to be more open-minded and patient. Delayed flights, people not showing up and things breaking down are things I routinely encounter. I don’t get as worked up anymore when these things happen.
6. What destination have you found to be underrated?
Phnom Penh. Many people skip it and favor Siem Reap instead for Angkor Wat. But I think Cambodia’s relatively laidback and charming capital has lots to offer. The people are really friendly as well.
7. What is your dream travelling experience?
I would like to walk the silk road from one end to another. I have been to many places throughout the silk road but these were done in separate trips. What I like to do is plan out a longer trip following the route of the explorers of yore.
8. What place is top of your bucket list?
Right now it would be the Caucasus Region and Central Asia. I was supposed to go there before the pandemic hit.
9. What can't you travel without?
I definitely cannot live without my mobile phone. I use it to navigate just about anywhere.
10. What is your long term plan/ future plans?
The thing about me is that I don’t make long-term plans. But if you ask me about plans for the near future, I have got quite a few. One of them is to go on a long trip somewhere that accepts travelers.
11. Which is your favorite book and why?
Lost Horizon by James Hilton – quite an epic travel-themed novel.
