About the Book

Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was originally performed in October 1962. It explores the difficulties of Martha and George's middle-aged marriage. They invite an unknowing younger couple, Nick and Honey, as guests late one evening after a university faculty party, and drag them into their angry and tormented relationship.

Book Summary

The drama is set on a New England college campus, at the house of George, a professor, and his wife, Martha, the college president's daughter. Martha and George are returning from a party at Martha's father's house when the play begins.

They argue drunkenly with each other, and Martha tells George that they have visitors coming over, even though it is two o'clock in the morning, as George reminds her. Martha frantically sings "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" to the melody of "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf," which she appears to have created during the party.

The doorbell rings and George answers it just as Martha screams, "Fuck you!" Honey and Nick, enter, but they seem to really be dissatisfied about their visit to George and Martha’s house. They start talking about the party, and Nick, a new professor, expresses his appreciation for the president's events for helping him get to know the campus.

Martha and Honey take a break to use the toilet. George taunts Nick, then informs him about the school pattern of sleeping with other professors' spouses in "musical beds." Nick growls, annoyed by George's obnoxiousness.

Nick says that he teaches Biology, with a special research focus on genetics, while George assumes he is in the Math department. Nick is accused by George of modifying chromosomes to make everyone similar. Honey reappears and informs George that she has learned of his son's death; George is saddened by the news. Martha walks into the room after Honey.

When George departs to grab more liquor, Martha proceeds to inform Honey and Nick about their marriage's difficulties. She reveals that she married George partly because her father saw him as a future president, but that he eventually lost faith in him. In the middle of her story, George reappears in the room. He shatters a bottle on the bar and begins singing "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" loudly. Honey informs everyone that she will be ill.

While Martha looks after Honey, George and Nick talk. Nick informs George that Honey is prone to illness and that he married her due to a "hysterical" pregnancy. George tells Nick about a kid he knew in high school who murdered both of his parents unintentionally.

Martha and Honey have returned, and George has turned up the music. Martha and Nick do a close-knit dance. George proceeds to discuss the concept of his second work before introducing the next game they would play, "Get the Guests." The narrative he portrays is the narrative of Nick and Honey's marriage, complete with a fake pregnancy and a mousiness on the wife's part.

Honey rushes from the room, vomiting once more. Martha seduces Nick into kissing her as George leaves to buy ice. When George returns, he starts reading a book and looks unconcerned when Martha tells him she is necking with one of the visitors. When Martha and Nick depart, George hears plates clattering in the kitchen and tosses a book at the sound before leaving.

Martha walks into the empty living room and starts babbling madly to herself. Nick walks in. They have a brief conversation until the doorbell rings, and Nick answers the door to find George. The next game they'll play is "raising up baby," according to George.

Despite Martha's objections, he starts talking about their son and then asks Martha to take over. She and George play off one other, each providing information from the son's early years. Then George claims that a guy from Western Union came in and handed a telegram notifying them that their son had died while Martha was out of the room.

When Martha inquiries about the telegram, George replies that he ate it and then bursts out laughing. Nick is accurate in his assumption that Martha and George are unable to have children. The visitors depart after saying their goodbyes. George places his hand on Martha's shoulder and sings "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Martha responds, "I am."
