Jodi Swenson - I'm A Member Of Gravy For The Brain, Which Is A voice-over Training Company Offers Recorded Videos, Training Courses, Resources, Live Readings & Webinars (Voice Over Artist, USA)

I try to keep up by following highly respected voiceover artists on social media and through email. I am also a member of Gravy for the Brain, which is a voiceover training company that offers tons of recorded videos and training courses and resources, as well as live readings and webinars.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am from a smaller town in North Dakota. I had aspirations of working in the medical field, which lead me to study athletic training, psychology and eventually veterinary technology. I ended up in a larger suburban town in Minnesota. I worked as a veterinary technician for 13 years before going over to the human health side in data management, wanting a more steady schedule and less stress for the benefit of myself and my family. I have a loving husband of almost 16 years and 2 wonderful children, ages 14 and 11. I also have the perfect dog - a 2 year old English Setter!

My journey into voiceover began when I would go in to record the radio commercials for the vet clinic that I worked at. It was so much fun and I received a lot of compliments on my voice. I didn't realize that voiceover was really a thing that people did, I thought they were all just done by employees of companies and on-camera actors.

2. What inspired you to become a voice over artist?

At first, I just thought it might be something that I could do to get myself out of the veterinary industry, but I learned that it is not an industry that you can "get rich quick" so I was content to work at it part-time while having a steady day job, as well.

I continue to do voiceovers as a "side hustle" because it is so freeing! I never really considered myself a creative person, mostly because I was so afraid of embarrassing myself, but with voiceover, I'm in a closet where no one can see me, so I can completely immerse myself into what I'm doing. And, if I mess up, I can just edit it out!

3. Do you often have to keep upskilling yourself?

Yes, I try to keep up by following highly respected voiceover artists on social media and through email. I am also a member of Gravy for the Brain, which is a voiceover training company that offers tons of recorded videos and training courses and resources, as well as live readings and webinars.

4. If not this, what would you be doing?

I might have a thrift store or online reselling business. I love finding value in second hand items and recycling.

5. What does your typical day look like?

I go to my day job, drink lots of coffee, come home and work on my voiceover stuff for a while, work on my animal rescue volunteer work online, go for a walk - if the weather allows, relax and watch some TV or streaming shows/movies, do some housework, hang out with my family, go to kids events/activities - if occurring at the time, and go to bed later than I should!

6. What is your mantra of success?

Everything is gonna work out, eventually!

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

The Myst Reader (Trilogy) - it's been awhile since I've read it, but it was a book that I just completely fell in love with while I was reading it. The characters and the story were all just so engaging and the beautiful worlds were similar to the early history of our world, but different enough to feel like you were in a fantasy.
