Wonsulting has now helped people from all different industries and backgrounds land at the Google’s, Facebook’s, and Deloitte’s of the world! We’ve also grown on social media to almost 1M+ followers
1. Tell us more about your background, upbringing and journey.
Jonathan: My name is Jonathan Javier, and I’m currently the CEO/Founder of Wonsulting. I remember when I was in college at the University of California, Riverside, I was applying to hundreds of different roles expecting responses back from one of my dream companies but unfortunately was rejected by all of them.
Coming from a Filipino background with no business experience, I sought to break into the industry, and by utilizing unconventional methods that I teach on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube, I was able to break into Snapchat, Google, and Cisco without applying.
The journey has never been a linear path; I’ve had many rejections to get to where I want to be, but rejection was always redirection for me. Throughout the past year, I’ve helped thousands of job-seekers land jobs and grew my social media presence to 700K+ followers and 30M+ views on content monthly.
Jerry: My name is Jerry Lee and I’m currently the COO of Wonsulting. I started my career at Google where I was the first intern at Google from my alma mater, Babson College. Shortly after, I was hired as an Analyst at Google, rising through the ranks to becoming a Sr. Strategy & Operations Manager in 2 years. After my time at Google, I led Product Strategy at Lucid Software.
Though my career may seem like I had it all figured out, it was quite the opposite. I grew up in a low-income, first-generation household where I had no idea what an internship was until my 1st year in college. However, the more I began to learn about recruiting, the more I began to realize there were formulaic steps you can take to land your dream job.
After 7 internships, I finally landed my internship at Google & that’s where my passion for speaking to 220+ organizations about career strategies bubbled.
2. How do you choose and prepare for a talk and what led you to speak on this platform?
How I prepared for my recent TEDx Talk was by practicing with friends to go over my flow, structure, and syntax. What’s very important about preparing for talks is to share your story but also expressing your passion in the topic. Before when I was growing up, I was always afraid to share my story.
I remember I would be cautious of what other people thought of me and how I spoke, but I learned how to share my voice and realized that many had a similar story to mine. This is what helped me grow and speak on many different platforms, having completed 220+ speaking engagements now to millions of attendees.
3. How can one become a public speaker?
I believe anyone can become a public speaker; you just have to have the confidence and you have to practice how you articulate your story. I think the natural feeling is to feel scared or nervous when speaking to a crowd; however, you become a better public speaker if you put yourself out there.
One thing I always did was volunteer for speaking engagements even though I wasn’t 100% sure how it would be; the reason being is because I love to put myself in a position where I’m comfortable with being uncomfortable. By doing so, you’ll be able to grow your skills and utilize it to strengthen your public speaking.
4. Can motivational speaking become a full time career?
Yes it can be! Motivational speakers such as Gary Vee and Simon Sinek are examples of people who became great public speakers; however, I do believe you must build the credibility of whatever you’re speaking to.
For example, if I were to become a motivational speaker regarding the job search and taught you how to break into top companies but never have worked there, it wouldn’t be as legitimate compared to someone who’s actually worked there.
That was the core reason why I worked at companies such as Snapchat, Google, and Cisco; to show others that if I can do it, you can too, and that’s how Wonsulting was able to become what it is today.
5. Which is your favourite talk ever and how did it change your life?
My favorite talk is a TEDxRanier talk by Patty Dobrowolski called “Draw Your Future”. The reason why this is one of my most favorite talks is because of what it taught me about goal setting, and it’s what’s helped me accomplish my goals every year for the past 4 years.
At Wonsulting, I had goals of pursuing entrepreneurship full-time while also growing my social media to hundreds of thousands; by “Draw Your Future” on a vision board, I was able to visualize the goals I had in mind which in turn motivated me to make my dreams into reality.
6. What are the best public speaking tips that have worked for you?
Jonathan: I’ve spoken at 220+ Wonsulting Events so far and believe that some of the most important tips are as follows:
- Practice, practice, and practice some more: Whether it’s with a family member or friend, it’s important to practice what you’re going to be speaking about but also writing it down on a document for reference. When I prepared for talks before, I would record myself speaking and would listen to what I would say during pastimes, whether it was driving to a different location or even in the shower!
- Listen to motivational music before your public speaking talk: Before every Wonsulting Workshop, I’ll listen to some motivational music (Ex: Hans Zimmer). This music helps ease the mind and energizes me to deliver a story to help all those attending.
- Be yourself: It’s more said than done, but just be you. If you have a joke you want to tell your audience, say it. Don’t force anything and be natural; you’ll see that people will also open up to you as well. We’re always posting different ways of how to improve your speaking on our Wonsulting YouTube!
Jerry: The best public speaking tip I’ve ever received was to speak slowly. One big problem I noticed when I started speaking to organizations was I spoke too quickly. This problem stemmed from my nerves - I was afraid of messing up, afraid of skipping a line and wanted to get it done with.
However once I joined Toastmasters, I learned my mind runs at 100 MPH, whereas the world runs at 10 MPH.
Talk slower in your head and it’ll naturally translate to making more impactful speeches.
7. What impact do you want to make in the world?
The biggest impact I want to make on the world is to bridge the job opportunity gap between those who graduate from the Harvards of the world and those who come from the Babson Colleges of the world.
Everyone should have the chance to be considered as strong candidates for their dream companies. For those who come from non-traditional backgrounds, it becomes much harder because they lack the fundamental job search skills like building a perfect resume, networking & interviewing.
We want to solve that problem by empowering every underdog in the world to take full control of their careers – one job at a time.
8. Which is your favourite book and why?
My favorite book has to be “David and Goliath” by Malcolm Gladwell. The reason why this is my favorite book is because it’s what inspired the idea of Wonsulting. I’ve always believed that I was a “David” and wanted to help the David’s of the world; in this case, it is the job-seekers from non-target schools/non-traditional backgrounds.
However, I always thought it was impossible to beat the Goliaths (Ex: Ivy League Schools) when going for my dream jobs. By learning and trying every job search strategy, I was able to not only get into my dream career but develop Wonsulting into a career consulting firm recognized by millions.
9. Tell us more about your firm Wonsulting?
At Wonsulting, our mission is to turn underdogs into winners: Helping those who come from non-target schools & non-traditional backgrounds to get them into their dream careers. We’ve had so many Wonsulting Success Stories, having tens of thousands of job-seekers landing offers and breaking into their dream careers.
Wonsulting all started as an idea at first when I was working in corporate; there was no one who looked like me nor came from my background, so I wanted to bridge the gap between the underdogs of the job search and get them into top companies.
Wonsulting has now helped people from all different industries and backgrounds land at the Google’s, Facebook’s, and Deloitte’s of the world! We’ve also grown on social media to almost 1M+ followers combined with our LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and more!
10. How can a career counsellor help someone take a more informed decision?
A career counsellor can help in many different ways to help someone make a more informed decision; we’ve partnered with many career centers such as with University of Texas at Austin to teach their students how to navigate the job search.
Students and job-seekers can set up office hours or appointments with their career counsellors to better understand where they are in the job search, how they can make an effective resume, and can get connected to vast alumni from their university because they have access to that data.
More students and job-seekers have to utilize their career centers to grow and advance in their careers.
11. How do you go about assessing someone and making recommendations?
How I go about assessing someone is all about their willingness to persist in the face of defeat and never see rejection as a setback but a comeback.
At Wonsulting, we believe that the job search is all about the mindset; you never fail if you never stop trying, and all you need is one yes at the end of the day to land your dream job. For those I recommend to recruiters and hiring managers, I look for their underdog mentality and their work ethic they put into helping others as well.
