Amrita Gandhi - The Internet Is a Difficult Place to Survive In, so Don’t Lose Faith in Yourself and Your Craft (Content Creator From India)

Amrita Gandhi

I am happy to state that I didn't waste a day during quarantine, I worked on my page and created a lot of content, and gave it my everything all along with managing the household chores since it was a lockdown

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am a passionate Communications and Soft Skills coach from Mumbai, India. I have been a ranker in my academics both at school and college. I am a Computer Engineer and an MBA Marketing postgraduate, however, English runs through my veins.

I have never shied away from trying out challenging and exciting things, and that's how I started English With Amrita too. The journey at English With Amrita has been a rollercoaster ride. I started with nothing and today we have a community of around 200000 students on social media platforms like Instagram, Youtube, Facebook (@englishwithamrita, @hinditoenglish.with.amrita), and our online classes.

2. When did you first decide that you wanted to create content and how did you start?

My love for the English language was born during my school days. However, since I come from a tier 2 city, there weren't many opportunities to pursue my passion and love for the English language back then. Fast forward to 10 years and there we were in 2020, sitting idle at our homes with a lot of free time. That's when the idea struck me. I thought of helping people around me to develop an interest in the English language and be able to speak in English confidently and fluently. For us Indians, English is our second language but it's paramount to have excellent communication skills if you wish to climb the corporate ladder or stand apart from the crowd.

I created my first video within the first week of quarantine 2020 and I've not looked back since then. I am happy to state that I didn't waste a day during quarantine, I worked on my page and created a lot of content, and gave it my everything all along with managing the household chores since it was a lockdown. Every single day since then, I have put out valuable content (video/picture post) on social media platforms, not a day off from posting. I remember having started from 0 followers to have reached a whooping 160000+ today on Instagram. Youtube is a tough nut to crack, but I won't give up. I started my Youtube
channel late, but no regrets. Everything takes time.

3. Is vlogging and YouTube content creation a financially sustainable career?

It can be financially sustainable, but with the new features that YouTube comes out with, as an ad-free experience of watching videos with a minimal subscription fee per month, I think it's going to leave several content creators with lesser money in the future. Creators need to hustle and find different avenues for earning money in the long run and that's why we see so many creators venturing into merchandising, modeling, brand collaborations, OTT opportunities, etc. I believe a creator can survive with a combination of all of the above. Putting all the eggs in one basket(read: Youtube) would be risky in the long run.

4. Who is your favorite creator and why?

MostlySane. She is hard-working, passionate, a natural actor, and is growing leaps and bounds in her career. I started following her in 2020, and have analyzed her career graph and it surely is inspiring. From Youtube videos to representing Youtube India to featuring in web series on several OTT platforms to running a studio to many more things. That girl takes it to step by step and proves how small steps can lead to achieving so much.

I also adore Priyanka Chopra and the way she has branded herself on the international platform. She is an example of someone who has lived life on her own terms and isn't sorry about it. I think that's how we women must live in the 21st century, rather than tying down our dreams and desires to a happily ever after with kids and an ignored career.

Women like these inspire me to take my own path, my own decisions, and not become a victim of societal pressures. At the end of the day, I should be happy with my life and choices, isn't it? And these women inspire me to carve out my own path.

5. How and where do you find inspiration to churn out content?

Content creation takes a lot of time, especially for pages like mine where we curate every single post. I refer to good books, reliable resources from the internet, and some of the little knowledge that I possess to curate content every day.

6. What does your typical day look like?

My schedule is variable and hence I can't conclude that this is how my typical day looks. However, in terms of work, it revolves around- content creation, conducting online classes, hiring fellow teachers to help me with the classes, managing teachers, managing leads and enquiries on our website, scheduling and rescheduling classes, the to and fro communications with the students and teachers, etc. and not to forget- having fun.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

The 7 habits of highly effective people. It's realistic and inspiring. Also because it's one of the books I read during a low phase in my life and it helped me to an extent.

8. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring creators?

The internet is a difficult place to survive in, so don't lose faith in yourself and your craft. Keep going and things will fall in place sooner or later. Fret not about the competition and the naysayers, focus on yourself and you can do wonders.
