As cliche as it might sound, but 'Content is the king'

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Hello and Namaste! My name is Minnat. I am an Indian currently living in Toronto, Canada. I moved to Canada 3 years back as a permanent resident. I work full-time at one of the big 6 Canadian banks and also create social media content during my spare time.

2. What led you to start your Instagram Page and what is it about?

I had always been passionate about creating social media content in one or the other forms. I started writing blogs a few years back, but couldn’t manage it due to my busy schedule. When COVID hit, I suddenly felt like I got some time to do one thing that I really wanted to do - create social media content. My content aims at helping newcomers with navigating their life in Canada.

3. Is it financially sustainable to be a digital creator these days?

Not really. The income earned from social media isn’t sufficient for paying your bills unless you have a huge following. Although my page has definitely grown from 100 to 10K followers in less than 2 years, I don’t think the revenue is good enough to be an independent source of income in itself, especially when I’m living in a city as expensive as Toronto.

4. How can someone become a successful content creator?

As cliche as it might sound, but 'Content is the king'. Your content should be authentic and your audience should be able to relate to it in a certain way. You might not be able to see the results overnight, so just be patient and things will work.

5. How and where do you find inspiration to churn out content?

Since my content is focused on new immigrants in Canada, I try to focus on what problems they might face after they land. I then try to come up with a possible solution to it. That is what generates new content ideas.

6. Who is your favourite creator and why?

I have not 1, but 3 favourites. Can’t really pick one. like Masoom Minawala, Shivani Bafna and Kompal Matta Kapoor. They’re all Indian girls showcasing Indian culture to the world. I love how real they are while still being successful content creators. I can totally relate to them.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

I love the book that I’m currently reading - Atomic Habits by James Clear. I love how detail-oriented it is. The book helped me in understanding how deeply rooted some of my habits, whether good or bad are. It also motivated me in building more productive habits. It is one of the best self-help books I’ve read.
