Sonu Venugopal - Most Of The Comedy I Do Is Inspired From My Life, That Is The Sweet Spot, I Am Yet To Do Something That Gives Me The Chills (Comedian, India)

A lot of people when I was on radio used to tell me that I am funny, so stand up comedy was a natural progression

1. How and when did you choose comedy as a career?

I started doing stand up comedy in 2018. The how part of the question is tough to answer. A lot of people when I was on radio used to tell me that I am funny, so stand up comedy was a natural progression.

I was not confident to say this though, so I gave myself 2 years to understand the artform (I read a lot and watched a lot of stand up shows irrespective of the language) and then I was like "ok! let us do this!".

2. What type of content do you enjoy producing the most and is the most challenging?

I am still experimenting with a lot of genres. Most of the comedy I do are inspired from my life. That is the sweet spot. I am yet to do something that gives me the chills.

3. Do you prefer digital as a medium or do you enjoy doing live gigs more and why?

I have started enjoying both. I love live gigs. The feel and vibe of it is something totally different. But the digital medium is like "net practice" for me. It keeps me in the habit of creating content every single day and sometimes the subject makes me dig deeper and then that paves way for my stand up content as well!

4. People, who are interested in taking up stand-up comedy as a profession, do they need a funny bone or they can develop one?

More than being funny, they have to be aware! That gives them a chance to criss-cross the ideas. But yes looking at things differently is needed. One has to have that quirk. But just being funny is not enough.

5. How stable is being a stand-up comedian as a profession in India? And what is the future of this profession?

It is picking up. You have to make yourself a brand, and that takes time because in India competition is fierce! Also being at the right place at the right time is very very important. I wouldnt be able to talk much about the future but I am hoping that it is bright!

6. What impact do you want to make in this world?

Honestly nothing! It is too big a responsibility. I just want to write and perform for as long as I can, go on long vacations in between, eat the best food that there is and try my best not to hurt people around me.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

R.K Narayan's Malgudi days. I have been a fan since I was a child. Being a South Indian, his writing resonates with most of us.
