Synopsis

The story is about two brothers Vibhooti and Chiraunji who have ‘fought’ their share of ghosts - the ability passed down to them by their father. However, Vibhooti the elder brother does not believe in any supernatural being and has always felt bad for his brother who has immense trust in his father, his doings, and the literature of such beings.

After the death of their father, the book left behind by him was the only source of hope for Chiraunji to give him strength and hold onto his beliefs. Soon, as a new case comes to them, they are forced to rethink their own abilities and beliefs.

About the Director

Pawan Kriplani is an Indian film director with a predominant history of working in Bollywood. He is the director of the newly released comedy-horror film ‘Bhoot Police’. Previously, he was also known for his horror movie ‘Ragini MMS’ in 2011, ‘Darr at the Mall’ in 2014, and ‘Phobia’ in 2016.

About the Movie

Bhoot Police was released on September 10 on the OTT platform, Disney+Hotstar. The movie stars Yami Gautam Dhar, Javed Jaaferi, Jacqueline Fernandez, Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, etc.

The movie was originally titled ‘Tantrics’ and had gone through several drafts jumping production houses after which the script was finally written. The final film is now an adventure film with elements of horror and comedy.

My Critical Response

Certain speculations were made that Bhoot Police was made with the purpose to elevate the Scooby-Doo level script and it failed to do so. My speculation is that since these types of movies regarding adventure with elements of comedy and horror have been in demand - such movies have lost the initial touch of horror that previously would give chills down the spine.

Bhoot Police is a movie with directional aspects, storyline, and cinematography very similar to other similar films like: ‘Roohi’ and ‘Stree’.  This newborn horror-comedy genre is relying more on cliches with mildly amusing aspects.

For horror genre fans, such movies may come across as low quality and disappointing. Few other speculations that were made say that Bhoot Police tried to igraine filtrations from Saif Ali Khan’s previous film ‘Go Goa Gone.

Bhoot Police definitely does provide moments of surprising emotional depth and projectile scenes from the ever and first famous horror film ‘The Exorcist in 1973, that is the vomit, and wall-crawling scenes while the haunted forest is a typical element of presentation in Bollywood to give the creeps.

The movie is nothing more than a childish film. Additionally, the performances will leave you conflicted - an odd mix of trying hard to be funny and invested in the character. The film’s additional purpose seemed to mock the dhongi babas who dupe people, superstitions, blind faith but eventually mocks down its own premise.

Furthermore, Jamie Lever and Javed Jaaferi’s impression to make the audience laugh is hilarious, their characters take turns dumping and struggling for the same. All sporadic jokes, induced chuckles, and the complete proportion of these aspects seemed to have taken a backseat.

It is all the more the same as many English horror movies or alien movies using the same pattern and format just twisting things a little and providing the creature/ghost a new design. I think it is time for the creators to question - what is missing in the innovation of ideas and products to make each piece different from so many similars.

Hilarious Childish Scenes from the Movie

Well, these are the very scenes for which you may go ahead and skip this film.

1. The Bedroom Scene - Even the ghost is not spooky.

2. Character Struggling to be Funny - Javed Jaaferi’s character trying to be as funny as possible

The Bottom Line

“A poor drop diluting the purpose.”

Bhoot Police is made out of inconsistent writing, misplaced references, predictable twists leaving you with a vague feeling: ‘What did I just see? Is this it?”.

Although the film and characters do not lack sincerity there is limited and sulking humor hindering it from making the cut for a horror or comedy movie.

My ratings for the movie - 1 on 5
