Samrat Awasthi

I believe that with training you get the right path which can save a lot of time and time is money you know.

My advice to future and aspiring artists, as a friend, would be to please stay honest. Keep faith in yourself, good things take time. Keep polishing yourself every day.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I belong to a middle-class family where like most of the middle-class parent, my parents wanted me to either pursue medicine or engineering. However, deep down I knew about myself. I hope you are getting me. Fortunately, I chose my way and started digging.

During this journey, I learnt a lot of things, sometimes from random people and sometimes got cheated as well. A good thing happened after I cleared my 12th exam, in the same year, I released my first ever song as a singer from “Unisys Music”. Later on, I studied audio engineering in Mumbai. I’ve also learnt background scoring.

I am still learning a lot of things from both online and offline mediums. Recently, I’ve started releasing my songs on YouTube and all the other music platforms while at the same time, I’m also working as both a music director and a singer with a couple of directors and other musicians.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?

I was in 9th standard, I guess, when I started giving guitar tuitions to the students. However, till that moment I didn’t plan to make a career in music. As I mentioned before, I knew about my studies and I realized that I could do better in music than studies.

Also, I didn’t want to curse myself for being a mediocre for the rest of my life and this is how I came into music. I started to make some good links but that somehow, didn’t work as expected. I learnt singing, playing guitar, piano and music production as well.

3. Who is your favorite artist and why?

In India, I like a couple of musicians but A. R. Rahman is my most favorite one. The reason why I like him is his compositions and the way he put music on. He never follows a composition pattern which makes him more specific. He has his own style of making music. I admire him a lot. Apart from him, I like Charlie Puth, Jacob Collier, John Mayer, Hans Zimmer, Finneas, etc. the list can go on forever.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

There are a lot of things you can get and for me as always, I wanted to do something in music no matter what it is, be it, singing, playing any instrument or music programming. So, I’ve tried to learn everything in music and now I do film BGM (Background Music) as well as making songs. I would say just dig in a bit and you will find your right way.

5. Is format training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

Training is important in every field I would say, but sometimes people are God-gifted. I believe that with training you get the right path which can save a lot of time and time is money you know. I’ve heard about a couple of Bollywood singers who didn’t even learn music but they have ruled and are ruling the industry, even now. I believe everyone has their destiny.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

My advice to future and aspiring artists, as a friend, would be to please stay honest. Keep faith in yourself, good things take time. Keep polishing yourself every day. This is my only mantra.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

Honestly, I am not a book lover. However, someone suggested me to read “The Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta”. It teaches us the unique way of living life that eases off our tension and we can learn to live a happy and healthy life. Apart from being a religious scripture, it is a scripture of life as well. It is a way of life which is based on faith and devotion.
