Movie Review : Gehraiyaan: A Beautifully Directed Complex Love Triangle

The concept of infidelity now has commenced becoming one of the common problems in relationships. Whether in a living relationship or in a marriage. Adultery is now common. We try to find how people react to it when they go through it. Many divorces happen because of infidelity. 

Dharma productions earlier made a movie Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna related to infidelity and how it affects the lives of people. The concept through which the whole film was filmed was missing.

Plot

The film revolves around four people Tia, Alisha, Karan, and Zain. Tia, Alisha, and Karan were childhood friends and Tia and Alisha are cousins. 

They were separated in childhood due to family issues. Tia moved to America and Alisha shifted to Nasik. Their lives change when they meet after Nine years on a yacht with Tia’s fiance Zain and immediately Alisha and Zain get in a relationship.

What’s not

After watching the whole film I was figuring out what the film was about. More than infidelity the film was about using one person to satisfy their need. The whole film was more about cheating than infidelity. 

How directors approached it as infidelity. Talking about the earlier film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna it showed the concept of infidelity and why people indulge in infidelity and how rare its consequences are Something which made me want to watch this film. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna explored the concept of infidelity.

If we see in the movie Gehraiyaan which is also produced by Dharma Productions they touched on the concept of infidelity. The rest of the film was about how one person is cheating the other to satisfy their greed.

Seeing the trailer of the film I was excited to watch because it was full of suspense but when I watched the whole movie I was figuring out what will be in the end because it was a whole mess.

Something which I feel was a major flaw in the film was the scripting of the film. Maybe the film was made around infidelity but it lacked the most. Shakun Batra could have put more emphasis on this. Secondly, the chemistry between Ananya Pandey And Siddhant Chaturvedi which I felt was poor. 

There were some scenes where they were not syncing at all which made the plot look weak. If we discuss the acting skills of protagonists the only reason the film was watchable was because of Deepika Padukone. Only Deepika Padukone had real acting. Other protagonists were average in their acting skills. 

Ananya Pandey has improved in her acting skills. Yet, she has to struggle a lot to be one of the finest actors. Siddhant Chaturvedi was fine but somewhere he did not give justice to his character. 

I feel it was the problem in the script. Dhairya Karwa's role was more like a cameo. Being one of the protagonists he had a short role in the film I feel more emphasis should be given to his character. Being a brilliant actor he should be given more opportunities.

What was good in the film?

The cinematography of the film was excellent. I really liked the visuals of the film. Secondly, the love, adventure in the film made it really exciting to watch, especially the sound of the waves. The songs of the film I appreciate were amazing which kept the whole movie hooked. I would like to acknowledge the acting skills of Deepika Padukone. 

This film survived from drowning only because of her acting skills. Her nuanced acting made the film more curious and interesting to watch. The chemistry between Deepika and Sidhaant was hot. They looked like love birds in the film. The concept of modern touch and suspense made the film meaningful to watch.

Conclusion

The film is not what we expected. Except for Deepika Padukone, none of the protagonists in the film were unable to do justice with their characters. Even skin showing cannot make the film successful. Instead, the director Should focus more on acting skills than intimate scenes.  The film is streaming on Amazon Prime. The movie should justify the title. 

My ratings for the movie -  2.5 on 5.
