‘A person should not do that to others, which he does not like to be done to himself.’

Introduction

Mahabharata is an epic saga between two groups of the Kuru clan to overpower the throne of Hastinapur. This Sanskrit text is more than a thousand years old and we all have heard stories and seen movies and shows based on it. As much as interesting and dramatic are its chapters are, the lessons derived from them are even more genuine.

It’s the Indian version of Game of Thrones only more pious, divine, authentic, and fruitful. Over the years, stories of the Mahabharata have been revised and its characters re-lived. However, a walk down the memory lane sheds light on the fact that there were some characters that were underrated and perhaps forgotten even.

Some of those characters are:

  • Ashwathama

This one might be underrated but his immortality makes him a topic of discussion even today. Ashwathama was tall, bulky, dark, and a gem on his forehead. Born to the guru of Pandavas; Dronacharya he was envious of them.

Not Unlike the Kuravs he had his reservations with Arjuna, skeptical about  his future with his father. He was cursed by Shri Krishna of 3000 years of solitude with a diseased body and even snatched away his gem.

  • Gandhari

A blindfolded woman with hundreds of sons and collateral damage for her husband. She was always mistreated by him, but her strength and power kept her intact in her religion and values.

She never left the path of Dharma and remained faithful to her morals. She is underrated because she was one of the most invincible ladies in the saga but her role is not discussed as much, mainly because of her relationship with the Kurv clan.

  • Ghatotkach

The tale about the night war victory of the Pandavas is all about this behemoth creature. Son of Bheem and giantess Hidimbi, Ghatotkach became crucial around the eventuality of the war.

The blend of blood in Ghatotkach developed a half-demon formulation. This one wreaked havoc in the battleground.  Consequently, he was beaten to death by Karna via his Shakti Astra. Arjun’s son Abhimanyu’s marriage could only take place because of his contribution.

  • Barbarika

This character is missed by many, not a lot of people are acquainted with his journey. However, it’s said that, had he fought the Kurukshetra battle, the nature of it would have been entirely different. A ferocious ruler in the field and was the son of Ghatotkach and Ahilawati.

He was gifted the three infallible arrows by Valmiki and was coached by his mother. The man was bound by principle to fight for the weaker side only. However, assessing the faults in the principle, Krishna realized that the side Barbarika would not fight for would become weaker by default. So asked for his head in charity, leading to his demise.

  • Sanjay

Sanjay was the eyes of the blind king Dhritarashtra and was blessed with superpowers. He also possessed the power of foreseeing future events. Not only did he narrate the Bhagavad Gita to Dhristarastra but also the entire war events. He was the advisor and charioteer to the king too. He really was the underrated character with his contribution considered.

Bottom Line

Well, there are many such characters who aren’t as famous despite their great negative or positive contribution, but after some nit-picking, a bunch of characters I have listed could be helpful.
