Know Everything About Indira Gandhi Assassination 1984: Riots in Delhi and Punjab

Indira Gandhi is considered one of the strongest Prime Ministers in the history of India because there are many strong decisions taken by her to show her leadership in the country but there are also some wrong decisions that are also included in her tenure. She is the first female Prime Minister of Independent India. Indira Gandhi is the only Prime Minister that imposed an Emergency in the country for 2 years from 1975 to 1977. 


She is the first Prime Minister who was assassinated by his own security guards on 31 October 1984. This is a very shocking incident for the whole country that the Prime Minister was assassinated. There were such reasons why Indira Gandhi was assassinated and the result of this incident was the riots that happened in Delhi and some areas of Punjab because the security guards belonged to the Sikh religion. 


Indira When Gandhi imposed a National Emergency in the country, everyone from opposition leaders to the Public criticized Indira Gandhi for this decision the result of this incident is that the first time Congress lost the election was in 1977 and other political parties came into power. But after 3 years the Government lost the election and Congress won again in 1980 and Indira Gandhi again became the Prime Minister. And she had become PM till 1984 until she got assassinated.


There were incidents that were responsible for the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Operation Blue Star is the main reason behind the assassination of Indira Gandhi. 

The operation was conducted at Golden Temple in Punjab where the Indian Army went and they killed the Khalistani leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.


But this incident also hurts the religious sentiments of Sikh people because there was the faith of Sikh people in the Golden Temple. So, they do not support the Government in this action.

And those bodyguards who killed Indira Gandhi were also included in that category whose religious sentiments got hurt.


Riots were there in Delhi and Punjab


After Indira Gandhi’s Assassination, riots began in Delhi and Punjab. Many people died due to these riots. The Sikhs died in Delhi and Hindus died in Punjab many Congress leaders supported these riots and they were also responsible for conducting the riots.


The security guards were responsible for the assassination of Indira Gandhi but the Congress party would give punishments to the whole Sikh community. The Riots were not the solution to anything and the Public suffered in these riots only those who died but their families also.


Many houses were set on fire by the rioters in Delhi and Punjab region. There was instability in the whole country when Indira Gandhi got assassinated and the whole country gave tribute to the Iron Lady of India. But on the other hand, Hindus and Sikhs were being killed in these riots. After Indira Gandhi died Rajiv Gandhi became the next Prime Minister of India. He has no experience in politics because he was a commercial pilot.


Indira Gandhi's assassins got hanged after the court's decision


After Indira Gandhi got assassinated by his own security guards, the Congress party demanded that the assassins got hanged over till death.

This matter was to go to the Court where Kapil Sibal, Lawyer, and leader of Congress party should fight on Congress party where Ram Jethmalani, the senior lawyer would defend the security guards of Indira Gandhi.


The matter was gone too long in the court and the final court gave his judgment that the security guards name was Satwant Singh and Beant Singh were involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi, so the court founds them guilty and gave them hanged death punishment. 


Indira Gandhi was the first Prime Minister who got assassinated and after that, his son Rajiv Gandhi was also assassinated by LTTE(Liberation Tigers for Tamil Eelam). These two people were the only Prime Ministers who got assassinated in the history of Indian politics.


There was the main reason behind Indira Gandhi’s Assassination was Operation Blue Star in which the Indian Army enters the Golden Temple and it was the first operation in which Army have to come to such religious places.
