Synopsis (No Spoiler!)

This anime series starts with an epic tale of five basketball players known as the Generation of Miracles. They were a powerful team that dominates every other team. After graduation from middle school, these five stars went to different high schools which had top basketball teams.

Apart from these players, there was Phantom Sixth Man named Tetsuya Kuroko. He went to the Seirin High School basketball team, which was not that famous. Upon meeting Taiga Kagami he decides to become his shadow to help him in becoming Japan's greatest basketball player.

About the Writer/ Illustrator

Tadatoshi Fujimaki was born on 9th June 1982 in Tokyo, Japan. He attended Tokyo Metropolitan Toyama High School and enrolled in Sophia University. After finishing his studies he chose a career in the manga.

Fujimaki is a Japanese manga artist, best known for creating sports manga Kuroko's Basketball and golf-based Robot × LaserBeam, both serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump.

About the Series

The Seirin High School basketball team recruits two freshmen Taiga Kagami and Tetsuya Kuroko. They both have significant differences in abilities: Kagami has both a natural aptitude and relentless love for the sport while Kuroko lacks presence and exhibits no outstanding athletic talent. But later he proves that he is strong in his way.

The anime chronicles Seirin's rise to become Japan's number one high school team by defeating the members of The Generation of Miracles (Ryota Kise, Shintaro Midorima, Daiki Aomine, Atsushi Murasakibara, and Seijuro Akashi) one by one.

According to Kuroko, his former teammates were talented but the only thing they lack was teamwork. They began to believe and trust themselves only to score points which made Kuroko leave his team in the end. That’s why he joined the Seirin High School basketball team to prove that they were wrong. This path was not so easy for him, he had to face many problems and defeats. But in the end, he did it as he promised.

“Team isn’t just something to be protected. A team also protects you. We don’t support each because we are a team. We are a team because we support each other.” – Teppei Kiyoshi

This theme of friendship and teamwork not only revolves around Kuroko but other members of Seirin also. With these beliefs, they even win many matches. He was always considered a shadow but with help of Kagami’s light, he proved that victory is not possible without teamwork.

From time to time, when Kagami loses track, Kuroko reminds him by whacking him in the head and giving the reality check that he had to rely on his team to stop the Generation of Miracles. Eventually, Kagami also began to rely on his teammates more.

“Without strong opponents, living isn’t fun. It’s perfect if I can’t win.” – Taiga Kagami

Another theme, of course, is a rivalry. We cannot talk about sports without any competition. Right? Players don’t find fun if there is no competition or even if there is no will to win, they started losing interest in the game. The same happens with the player Daiki Aomine in this anime also. But when he loses the first time, thanks to the ace of Seirin Kagami, he started gaining his interest in basketball and went to practice.

“If you haven’t changed, that means you haven’t improved.” – Tetsuya Kuroko

The hunger for victory can even improve your skill. This series shows how every player grows and try to improve individual skills. They don’t want to depend on their teammates every time. Not only this but also a healthy rivalry we came to see in this anime. Maybe they were different on the court but off the court, they were all just friends. They eat at a restaurant, went to a sauna, play basketball and laugh together. And that’s why I love this anime.

“So long as I don’t give up, the possibility of winning will never fall to zero.” – Tetsuya Kuroko

They don’t even give up until the very end. Their determination for the game can make you excited and sit hours in front of your T.V. Even if they lose the game, they will say that they will come back and win another game. Hats off to their passion for the game!!

Lastly, I want to say about the most attractive thing about this series was the zone part where a player reaches their maximum potential of concentration and focus to win a game. This seems to be unrealistic sometimes but whenever I watched this part it gives me goosebumps. In the end also when Kagami reaches the zone with help of the powers of his teammates and wins their match against Akashi was the best scene in the anime. Apart from this, there was comedy in between all the seriousness of the game which makes this anime not boring as well.

How can I miss the part about female roles in this? Everyone thinks that sports are for men only. Women are not made for such things but the parts of females here take it to another level. Most of the female role was of Coaches!! And I love how they give orders to boys.

My rating on this anime is 4/5

You can watch this on Netflix.
