Synopsis - Non-Spoiler Alert

Laal Singh Chaddha traces the extraordinary journey of Laal, a Punjabi Sikh across different stages of his life. Primarily dwelling upon his love story with Rupa (played by Kareena Kapoor Khan). A boy with a disability, who goes through tumultuous times and overcomes the problems with his immense love for his mother (Mona J Singh) and Rupa. The two women have a shaping influence on his life.

The story begins from when Laal was a child up until when he becomes an old man. His story is primarily set around Laal’s own narration of his life and then eventually unfurls. His experiences are set in the context of his socio-political situation. Several events from the 1983 Sikh riots, to anti-reservation protests and to Kargil war form an innate turning point in the plot.

Although the protagonist of the plot is Laal only, other characters like his mother, Rupa, Muhammad, and Balaraja also have a good plot trajectory.

About the Director

Director Advait Chandan has previously worked as an assistant director as well. He made his directorial debut in Secret Superstar.  He also worked as the casting director and post-production supervisor on Kiran Rao's debut venture Dhobi Ghat

Themes Involved

The movie themes of war, violence, friendship, love, and identity. All the themes are intertwined with each other.

Although love forms a primary theme throughout the movie, friendship and identity are also fundamental. The element of identity is also very well depicted in the given socio-political scenario. The movie shows how hate is insidious and terribly affects the lives of the common people. In my opinion more than anything, Laal’s story is primarily an attempt to comment on that.

Public Verdict

The movie was a hit at the box office and became the highest-grossing Hindi film at the International Box Office in 2022. However, the movie did have a dull opening weekend.

An adaptation?

The movie is a remake of the 1994 Hollywood drama Forrest Gump. The screenplay of the adaptation was written by Atul Kulkarni, which was initially written by Eric Roth.

What makes it a must-watch?

Laal Singh Chaddha’s extraordinary journey will fill you with love, warmth, happiness and definitely make you laugh. The movie is an adaptation, and that's very evident. From creative frames to the core idea. But the story can be given a hundred on hundred if you are oblivious to Forrest Gump.

It is impossible to not stay hooked to the movie for the innocence it exudes and the transfer of plots to a subcontinental context. The songs and the directorial vision are the cherry on top. The commendable acting prowess of anybody who is even meekly a part of the movie can in no way be denied. The casting is apt and so is the delivery of the performance.

The Bottom Line

The movie may not be a Taare Zameen Par or a 3-Idiot level grandiose piece of cinema that you might be waiting for. But Aamir Khan’s presence on screen does not fail to make you smile. The characters are played with so much devotion that you cannot help but engage with them.

The movie might be an adaptation and a blatant one but at its core, it is beautiful and innocent. If you enter the theater with no expectations you might come out happy. The movie makes you cry, laugh, and you awe all at the same time.

The cameos and the acting and the songs are all extremely beautiful. The core of the movie however lies in the fact that it's innocent. Laal Singh Chaddha’s innocence is lovely and contagious.

Aamir Khan returns back to the screen after a very long and for his fans it was a long wait. The movie might not be a cent-percent to fall for but it definitely is a piece of cinema that you can hold on to on bad days.

My ratings for the movie - are 3 out of 5

You may watch the movie at a theater near you
