She was also announced as  “Sweden’s most powerful politician under 30” by Expressen, a nationwide evening newspaper of Sweden in 2022.

This Scandinavian country has been making tremendous efforts in the past in response to climate change. Their model is an exemplary blueprint for the entire world, including developing countries as well.

Who is Romina Pourmokhtari?

Romina Pourmokhtari was born on 12 November 1995 and is a Swedish politician for the Liberals, one of the political parties that actively contest in Swedish elections. She has been serving as the Minister for the Environment since 2022 in the Kristersson Cabinet. She has also been a member of the Riksdag for Stockholm Municipality since 2022. She is the youngest-ever minister of a cabinet in Sweden, rising to her position at the age of only 26.

She was born into a family of Iranian origin in the suburbs of Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. This young woman inherits the climate and environment portfolio and beat the previous record of 27 years old for the youngest minister by becoming the cabinet minister at the age of only 26.

Political Parties in the Sweden Legislature

The Sweden legislature, Riksdag, has a total of 349 seats. In Swedish elections, a party needs a majority of 175 seats to form its respective government. There are currently eight political parties in Sweden, divided into two major groups.

The first group comprises the Social Democratic Party, the Centre Party, the Left Party, and the Green Party thus forming a left-leaning bloc. The other group consists of the Moderates, the SD ( Sweden Democrats), the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals and hence forming a right-leaning bloc. The former Swedish PM, Magdalena Andersson, hailed from the Social Democratic Party. She resigned in the aftermath of the election results and has been replaced by Ulf Kristersson as the PM who belongs to the Moderate party.

Understanding the Sweden Elections 2022

Sweden’s new Parliament opened up on September 26, 2022. The newly elected members of Parliament have selected the next Prime Minister (PM). Moderate Party leader, Ulf Kristersson is the new Prime Minister of Sweden.

The outcome of the recent elections has opened new facets of politics in Sweden as well as in Europe. The coalition of right-bloc parties has secured a majority in Parliament. The Sweden Democrats (SD), a rightist party emerged as the second-largest party in the elections.

Incoming Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on 18 October 2022 promised to sail the country on a new course on immigration, criminal justice, and energy policy as he represented a center-right coalition government led by his conservative Moderate Party.

The new Swedish Cabinet now consists of 24 ministers - 13 men and 11 women. Thirteen are Moderates, six are Christian Democrats, and five are Liberals. The three center-right parties secured a majority in Parliament after the September 11 elections with the help of the Sweden Democrats, a right-oriented party that has entered the political mainstream after years of being treated as an outcast by the other parties.

Moderate Party parliamentary leader Tobias Billstrom was appointed foreign minister while the head of Parliament's defense committee, Pal Jonson, another Moderate, was selected as the defense minister.

Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch became energy minister, and 26-year-old Romina Pourmokhtari of the Liberals made history as Sweden's youngest-ever Cabinet minister and has been left in charge of the climate and environment portfolio.

Elisabeth Svantesson, the Moderate Party's spokeswoman on economic policy, was appointed as the finance minister.

He also promised a "paradigm shift" in immigration policy, marking a definite end to decades of liberal immigration policies that had started to tighten already under the previous Social Democratic government.

Conclusion

This new appointment of Romina Pourmokhtari reflects the sheer level of competition women of this generation are offering in today’s world. She represents all the young female activists of Sweden like Greta Thunberg who are sacrificing their childhood for the greater cause of humanity.
