The film beautifully presents the conflict and the twisted mother-daughter relationship, and it unravels with an emotional horror. Anvita Dutt's world-building and narrative of contrasting points of view are what make her storytelling and writing so beautiful. You can see the mother-daughter dance of psychological conflict between Qala's ambition and her mother's contempt.
Young Qala (Triptii Dimri), a native of Himachal, aspires to match the fame and ability of her legendary family of classical singers. Her mother (Swastika Mukherjee) tells her firmly, "Naam ke aagey Pandit hona chahiye, naam ke peeche bai nahi," making sure her daughter understands the pressures she faces. The gullible daughter strives to please her demanding mother and longs for her acceptance.
However, Jagan's (Babil) voice's heavenly force captures the mother's attention and she picks him (an outsider) to be the worthy heir to her family's history and showers him with mother-son devotion.
It is suggested to Qala that she get married and spend her life with her spouse rather than pursuing a career in cinema music because, in those days, respectable ladies weren't welcome there.
According to Qala, it is an instance of sexism, patriarchy, and discriminatory treatment of women. While the mother is aware of her daughter's concerns and is adamant that Jagan, who is more gifted, should be given more responsibility, the daughter feels ignored by her mother.
Qala uses unethical methods to fulfill her desire, but her past haunts and traumatizes her.
Music and the background score

The biggest highlight of the film is its melodious and refreshing music. Amit Trivedi composed the soundtrack for the movie, while Sagar Desai composed the background music. Amitabh Bhattacharya, Swanand Kirkire, Varun Grover, and Kausar Munir contributed lyrics to the guest-composed song "Udh Jaayega." A popular Kangri folk song, "Amma Puchdi," performed by Sireesha Bhagavatula, was also remade for the movie.
The Song “Ghodey Pe Sawaar” by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Amit Trivedi has become immensely popular and is trending on Instagram reels.
Cinematography

Anvita Dutt's film, "Qala," has the most exquisite cinematography of the year, with each frame resembling an artistic painting. Whether it is a boat sliding over the Hooghly bridge or the snow-capped Himachal highlands or the warm, jewel-toned tones of a Calcutta night, the backdrop is wonderful.
The stage design, costumes, and color palette are fascinating and reflect Qala's childhood home in the Himalayas as well as her adult life in Kolkata. A particular mention should go to Siddharth Diwan (cinematography) and Meenal Agarwal (production design) for creating a universe that radiates seductive, unnerving energy and anguish. Even if there are times when the pace seems lethargic, inner turmoil and suffering can still be heard.
Personal Verdict

After watching so many disappointing Bollywood films, Qala stood out for me with its refreshing screenplay and mind-blowing execution. Everything from writing to cinematography is perfect. This is a wholesome film that sheds light on topics like patriarchy, depression, and mental health with a convincing plot. Each frame is artistically pleasing to the eye and the background score is perfectly used without overdoing anything. Tripti Dimri as Qala is a dream to watch, and the elegant Swastika Mukherjee with immaculate restraint and authority is promising as Qala’s mother.
If you are a cinephile this film is a must-watch.
My rating for the movie is 4.5 on 5
You can watch Qala on Netflix.
