What Is Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga?

It is a Hindu temple dedicated to shiva and is one of the twelve jyotirlingas, shrines which are said to be the most sacred abodes of shiva. It is located in the ancient city of Ujjain or Madhya Pradesh. The description of Mahakaleshwar has been inscribed even in Hindu Iran. It is said that the life of the city of Ujjain revolves highly around the blessing and the power of Mahaska.


Different Names Of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga


According to Hinduism, Mahakal refers to lord shiva as he is the destroyer of all elements. There is nothing beyond him, no element no dimensions not even time kaal. That is why he is maha kaal (greater time). Kaal is the time of death so it can also be referenced as the best of the greatest time of death, death of all that is. Mahakaal is known as the destroyer of the world.


Swayambhu means that the shiva linga gains power on its own. Another name is Dakshinamurti because the shiv linga in this temple faces towards the south direction.


The Myth of Mahakasleshwar


As per many other legendary sources, mahakaleshwar denotes time l.as, meaning lord shiva or Mahesh among the Trinity is known to have control over time. As per the story of the tandava, he performed when his wife mata Sati jumped into the fire as she could not bear her husband's disrespect by raja disrespect ( he was the father of Sati) during a havan. This was the moment when Shiva was about to destroy the world.


He is known as mahakaal rather than just bad elements he is the destroyer of enemies. Similarly, here is another story in which lord shiva took the form of mahakaal when a demon dushan tried to harm four of his eminent bhakts.


The Architecture Fact Of Mahakaleshwar


The present temple is a five-story structure and was constructed midway through the 18th century. Built-in bhimija, Chalukyas and Maratha styles of architecture marvel of note are it’s a walkway that was half of the 19 century by the Scindia. The temple has five levels and the garbhagiha is located underground where the shiva Linda is situated.


While you are entering the Garbhagiha of the main deity mahakaleshwar in the temple, you will also witness many other idols such as that of lord Ganesh, Mata Parvati, Kartikeya, Shri Rama and others. The main shrine or the shiva linga has a silver plate roof on the top that increases the royalty of the Mahakaleshwar even more.


Celebrations That Take Place At Mahakaleshwar


Nitya Yatra is when the devotees take a dip in the holy river and then pay a visit to the deities and n the temple. This possession is followed by devotees on different occasions such as Vijayadashami.


Bhasm-Arti


This special kind of arti takes place every day in the morning. For this ritual, the pujaris apply fresh ashes from the burial ground on the Mahakaleshwar. This arti is an important ritual in the temple.
