Imagine having a bachelor party in Las Vegas, a wild night of debauchery, and a group of friends to make endless memories but you have no memory of the night before.
That's the hilarious premise of 'The Hangover,' a comedy film that took the world by storm when it hit theatres in 2009.
But the question ‘ Is The Hangover worth your time‘? , remains unanswered. In this review, we will discuss the humour, unexpected twists and great moments that make this movie a classic. Get ready for a journey through the comedic chaos of a bachelor party gone wrong.
Overview
‘The Hangover’ is a comedy movie directed by Todd Philips and released in 2009. It follows the adventures of four friends - Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug, who go to Las Vegas for a bachelor party, but the wild nights take many interesting turns.
The next morning they woke up, having no memory of the previous night and discovered the groom, Doug was missing. The rest of the movie revolves around them trying to remember last night's event and finding Doug before his wedding.
Main Cast Members
1. Bradley Cooper as Phil Wenneck. Phil is a charismatic and confident member of the group who serves as the de facto leader during their chaotic adventure.
2. Ed Helms as Stu Price. Stu is a neurotic and easily startled member of the group. He is the one missing a tooth and is determined to find out what happened during their night out.
3. Zach Galifianakis as Alan Garner. Alan is the eccentric and clueless brother-in-law of the groom. His quirky behaviour and unpredictable actions provide much of the film's humour.
4. Justin Bartha as Doug Billings. Doug is the groom who goes missing during the bachelor party. Much of the film revolves around the group's efforts to find him before his wedding.
Strengths of The Movie
1. Humour
It is a comedy movie that has a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. The unexpected moments of the movie are what captivate you to keep watching it and enjoying your time.
Eg- When the cast discovers a tiger in their room is one of the best moments. The view of the tiger in the bathroom, along with the characters' baffled reactions, created a hilarious scene.
2. Mystery Elements
The mystery is one of the key factors that has kept the audience glued to the screen for this movie, the answer to the question ‘ What happened last night?’. And the outcomes they face without knowing what happened the next day are great.
3. Character Dynamics
It is the plot where the actual strength lies in the movie. It forms a perfect group. Phil is the confident and witty leader of the group. Stu provides comic relief through his neurotic and easily startled personality. Alan is the eccentric and clueless member of the group.
Eg- Character Alan’s interaction with others provides numerous funny moments. In sequels 2 & 3, whenever they are in a tight place all members ask Alan, ‘What did you do this time’?.
Potential Drawback of the movie
1. Raunchy Content
While the movie has a lot of humour and enjoyable moments, it can be off-putting for those who prefer family-friendly movies to watch because of the use of excessive language, drug use and the adult theme of Bangkok.
Eg - Throughout the movie, the cast uses explicit language and there are instances of drug use. In sequel 3 there is a bit of adultery in the movie.
2. Lack of depth
The Hangover is undoubtedly a comedy movie but some critics have argued that it lacks character development. It is more focused on comedy at the cost of deeper story-telling.
Viewers seeking a more profound narrative or character growth may find the film somewhat lacking in this regard.
Eg - Being a comedy movie, it focuses on laughter rather than the characters' personal issues and relationships. Alan, the uncaring one, has always done something stupid and has not learned anything from it.
3. Sequel Disparity
While the original ‘Hangover’ film received a lot of attention for its comedy. The sequel 2 & 3 didn't receive much attention. These films followed a similar formula to the original but struggled to capture the same magic.
Final Thoughts
The Hangover movie in conclusion is a great comedy movie to watch and worth your night time, if you appreciate outrageous and irreverent humour.
Personally saying, I watched the movie after I saw a clip in which Phil said on a call to his wife ‘We Fucked Up’. At that moment I knew it was going to be a great movie and it surely lived up to my expectations but the third part of the movie was quite boring.
'The Hangover' is a cinematic adventure you won't want to miss.
