Dr. Ruchika Mishra - Never Shy Away From a Demanding Situation (Implantologist, Founder & Director of Jaipur Implant Center)

A founder, according to my belief, is a person with many hats and many hands that just must keep their calm no matter the storm! The founder is not just the one with the founding idea or the vision, but rather the one with the knowledge of how to attain the vision.

1. Tell us more about your company and your journey.

My journey started from Bapuji Dental College in Devangeree in 2012 wherein I joined as a Senior Lecturer in Dentistry. Teaching students about the many aspects of our profession has been an intriguing source of motivation and joy for me always. Being a teacher not only opened avenues for me to share knowledge with my students in those years but also allowed me to stay connected with the evolving facets of our profession throughout.

Thus, even when I shifted back to Jaipur as the Associate Professor in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics and Oral Implantology at Rajasthan Dental College and Hospital, I harbored a keen interest in starting a center of my own wherein I will be able to impart the necessary steps of enhancement to the up-and-coming dentists of our community. Thus, the foundation of the Jaipur Implant Center began in 2014. From thereon, it was simply a journey of learning and growing with the people who kept associating with us, whether to teach or be taught.

Currently, Jaipur Implant Center is the singular ICOI-affiliated center in the entire of Northern India. We offer prolific courses of Fellowship and master's in Advanced Implantology under the tutelage of some of the best minds in the industry. With individual emphasis, firsthand training, and individual implant opportunities for each participant, our center is revered in the entire northern India for its course offerings. This is a journey made not overnight, but rather over an exhilarating span of a decade itself!

2. What is the typical role of a Founder person in any organization?

A founder, according to my belief, is a person with many hats and many hands that just must keep their calm no matter the storm! The founder is not just the one with the founding idea or the vision, but rather the one with the knowledge of how to attain the vision.

As a founder of Jaipur Implant Center, I have always imagined myself as being always in the eye of the storm, and yet realizing at each step that it is only with the unwavering support of my team that I am able to achieve it all. The typical role of a founder entails knowing what exactly the vision, mission, and future of the brand is. As the Founder of Jaipur Implant Center, I always realized it was my responsibility to know where exactly I wanted to take my center.

Communicating that effectively to the team at all times ensured that we were all on the same page regarding the growth. A typical role or responsibility of a Founder might not entail for them to hold answers to all the questions in any situation. Rather, it involves understanding the problem and delegating it efficiently to achieve the most desired response.

3. What is your biggest challenge when it comes to people management?

As a leader, I have always believed that one of the most versatile and valuable assets is the people involved in the brand name, the journey, and the healing process itself. They are the foundation of the center’s ethos, values, and success most importantly. At the same time, working with people involves realizing that each individual is different with their individual ambitions, aspirations, and aims that may or may not be aligned at all times with your company or center vision. And that, according to me, has been my biggest challenge regarding people management.

The success and longevity of the Jaipur Implant Center can be truly accredited to the team members involved with it. Be it the associate professors or the core doctors of my team who give the center their all at each step. However, at the same time, the onus lies on me to realize their individual needs in terms of growth, learning, and others and provide opportunities that let them grow individually while also adding value to the center.

4. Describe a time you had to make a tough decision (e.g., budget cuts, organizational restructuring, market withdrawal, etc.). What did you do and what was the result?

I think one of the most challenging times that we all have had to face has been the pandemic period itself. It was a turning point for each of us and specifically, for the center itself. A lot of tough decisions were taken to ensure the persistence of Jaipur Implant Center.

Be it realigning the course modules to better suit the changing times of online academics or taking tougher decisions in terms of the course budget keeping in mind the tough times that entailed for all. It was a really tiring period for each of my team members and myself. However, the one thing that allowed me to sail through such difficult times and decisions was transparent and mutual communication with my core team at all times.

It may sound cliché, but some of the most tough decisions that a leader must make can become much easier if it is duly communicated and discussed with the team at length. When your core team is on the same page as you, irrespective of the tougher decisions, the results are much more satisfying.

5. How can one know if they have a knack for Founder and will enjoy the role?

I ardently believe that one is not simply born a founder or grows up with an aim to become a founder. Rather, one acquires a vision and the drive to turn that vision into reality is what makes them a founder.

So, the easiest way to know if one has a knack for the founder, according to me, is to first realize whether they have a vision that they desperately want to turn into a reality. When it comes to enjoying the role, it is essential to comprehend that any role, be it that of a founder or manager or simply a team member, can become enjoyable only when one is a team member, ready to share the highs and lows with the team and grow together.

6. What are your tips for first-time and aspiring interns?

The one and only advice that I would like to share for first-timers and aspiring interns is to keep themselves open to experiencing the new and to never shy away from a demanding situation.

It is only when they broaden their horizons of learning and growth that they can reach higher pinnacles of achievement.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

On a personal note, I have always been more attracted by motivational books like the ‘5AM Club and ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’, etc. But, if there has been a book that I have repeatedly kept going back to, a story that has resonated and stayed with me the longest, filling me with warmth and hope, no matter how many times I read it, is ‘Time of My Life’ by Cecelia Ahern.

The tale explores the relation each of us holds with our lives on a personal level. In this mad dash to become who we are today, sometimes our own lives become the most neglected. I keep coming back to this tale to remind myself to take a breath and reconnect with life as a friend every time.
