Interesting Facts

Chak De! India released worldwide on August 10, 2007 in Hindi and English and collected Rs109 crore on Rs20 crore budget and became the third-highest grossing film for the year. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular film at the 55th National Film Awards. The title song is very popular and prominent in Indian culture and is played at sports on a regular basis. It proved to be socially impactful as it brought about the reorganisation of the Indian Hockey Federation in April 2008.

Cast

16 actresses portrayed Chak De! Girls in the movie with SRK in the main role. The best supporting actress award was given to the Chak De! Girls at the 14th Screen awards in 2008.

Beginning

The movie opens in Delhi during the final minutes of a Hockey World Cup match between India and Pakistan with Pakistan leading. Kabir Khan is fouled and he takes a penalty shootout. He misses and is later shown shaking hands with the Pakistani Captain. This is misunderstood and Khan is suspected of cheating in the game and thus forced to leave town.

The Comeback

Seven years later Mr. Tripathi, the head of India’s hockey association meets up to discuss the status of women hockey team. He feels that the team has no future as women only can cook and clean the house. Kabir comes into the picture and decides to train the girls.

The Girl Gang

The group of 16 women are divided by fierce competition and regional prejudices. Komal from Haryana clashes with Sabarwal from Chandigarh, short-tempered Kaur from Punjab bullies Rani and Soimoi from a village, Mary and Molly faces racial discrimination and the team seniors are too arrogant.

The Change of Character

Kabir gives up and goes to McDonald’s with the girls for farewell. The local boys tease a girl and the entire gang fights up. After a close match with the boys’ team, they are sent to the world cup where they manage to win it and make everyone proud.

Redefinition of Patriotism

Loving India means loving everything which means loving every state, every language, every culture and every individual. Chak De! India is a perfect portrayal of the same. It is interesting that hockey is at the centre of the plot, which highlights how we ignore our own national sports in pursuit of popular sports ventures like cricket.

A Web of Biases

The focus is on the players’ diversity and their underlying issues. It’s a place where girls from the North-East are treated as guests in our own country, a Telugu girl is said to be different from Tamil girl and Jharkhand girls are mocked to be from the circus. Also, there are a lot of differences between the girls. They have enough reasons to fight and bicker out of grudges based on class-divide or insensitivity.

The Lost Respect

SRK redeems his lost respect after years of disgrace, by teaching a team the right way to play. Here we see a metaphor where playing the right way means the right way to live our lives and the hockey sport represents life. The girls reunite after a lot of initial controversy and fights. They prove that unity in diversity is the key to India’s victory.

Final thoghts

Chak De! India is a must watch for youngsters. It is a full thriller drama having action and love for our nation. SRK is seen as a dashing young personality coaching a bunch of arrogant and short-tempered girls only to lift the world cup in the end. I have watched it several times and always gives me chills.
