Devika Tomar- NFTs Gave Me Hope That One Can Pursue Their Passion As A Full-Time Job (Creative Director From India)

Firstly, I aimed to create a platform where passion could be pursued as a full-time job rather than just a side hustle, particularly in the realm of art and fashion. Secondly, the aim was to promote local artisans and generate employment in the city of Taj and nearby.

1. Share your background and journey.

I'm Devika Tomar, a Creative Director and Digital Artist with seven years in the art and fashion industry. Having collaborated with renowned brands and clients like Urban Company, House of Masaba, Shankar Mahadevan, Matchbox Pictures, and Hilti (India), I launched House of Tomar in 2020. This ready-to-wear women's brand caters to ages 20-30, with a unique tomboy chic style, aiming to redefine women's fashion. My brand promotes local artists and generates employment. Within three months of launching on eCommerce, I became a She The People Digital Awards ’20 Nominee and was awarded India's 100 Great People Managers 2021, featured in Forbes Magazine India January 2022 Edition. Passionate about creativity, I found hope in the Web3 space and NFTs. After 6 months of research and study, I collaborated with an abroad-based team and worked on my first NFT Project. Currently, I serve as the Creative Director at Silent Protocol, a privacy protocol in the Web3 Space. My mission is to connect with the audience's emotions through visuals, encouraging every creative soul to share and learn from each other's experiences.

2. What made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in creative direction?

I realized my passion for creative direction during college, where I consistently received praise for my keen eye for aesthetics. Quickly recognizing my talent for selecting the right visual elements for effective expression, I understood my ability to connect emotionally through visuals. As a creative director, my focus is on expressing emotions through art, communicating messages effectively, and establishing meaningful connections with the target audience. The dynamic nature of the creative industry, with its constant evolution of trends, serves as a driving force that keeps me engaged and motivated in this field.

3. What advantages do you think NFTs bring to artists?

As mentioned before, NFTs gave me hope that one can pursue their passion as a full-time job. NFTs offer several advantages to artists. Some of the major advantages are ownership and authenticity. The blockchain technology underlying NFTs ensures a transparent and tamper-proof record of the artwork's origin. Decentralized Marketplace opens up new opportunities for artists to connect directly with a diverse audience and retain a more significant portion of their earnings. NFTs also provide global exposure to the artists. NFT platforms often come with built-in communities where artists can engage directly with their audience. This also helps in empowering emerging artists. Overall, NFTs offer artists a transformative way to showcase, sell, and benefit from their digital creations.

4. How do you balance creative freedom with meeting project objectives and client expectations?

As a Creative Director, I balance creative freedom with project objectives and client expectations by fostering open communication from the start. Understanding client needs allows me to guide the creative process while ensuring the team has the freedom to innovate within those parameters. Regular check-ins and feedback loops help maintain alignment, ensuring the final product meets both artistic vision and project goals.

5. What was the motivation behind starting your entrepreneurial journey and why 'House of Tomar'?

'House of Tomar' was born out of my desire to establish a brand that reflects a tomboy chic style. The motivation behind starting my entrepreneurial journey was twofold. Firstly, I aimed to create a platform where passion could be pursued as a full-time job rather than just a side hustle, particularly in the realm of art and fashion. Secondly, the aim was to promote local artisans and generate employment in the city of Taj and nearby.

6. What is a book you love and would recommend our readers to give it a try?

I recommend "Aesthetic Intelligence" by Pauline Brown. It's a must-read for creative individuals seeking to blend creativity with business. The book provides insights into how cultivating a heightened sensitivity to aesthetics can lead to better innovation, decision-making, and overall business success, drawing on the author's experiences in the luxury industry. It's concise and insightful.
