Introduction

The story is set in 1995 in Laltu, Punjab. Three friends, Mannu(Pannu), Balli(Grover), and Buggu(Kochar), shared a common dream of flying to London to earn in pounds and improve their living conditions.

One day, an ex-soldier named Hardayal Singh Dhillon - Hardy (Khan), arrives in Laltu. Hardy has come to meet a man who saved his life and wanted to return a tape recorder to express his gratitude. Mannu, who listened to Hardy's talk, took him to her house.

Upon reaching Mannu's house, Hardy discovers the tragic news that the man he intended to meet, Mannu's brother, has passed away. Mannu shares her dream with Hardy - the dream of flying to London to reclaim her home and improve her life.

Deeply moved by Mannu's story and wanting to honour the debt of gratitude he feels towards her brother, Hardy makes a heartfelt promise to Mannu.

He pledges to fulfil her dream of going to London, symbolically taking up the responsibility that fate had abruptly cut short for her brother.

The IELTS Exam

Manu, Balli and Buggu alongwith Hardy joined the English Speaking Coaching to clear the IELTS exam. The exam would help them to get a UK student visa more easily. There they met the teacher Geetu (Irani) and Sukhi (Kaushal) who also came to learn English .

At night, a drunk Sukhi told about his motto to fly to London to get back his girlfriend who got forcefully married to an NRI. The test was conducted and only Balli was able to clear the test.

Sukhi's girlfriend committed suicide due to Sukhi's inability to pass the test. By getting this news Sukhi burnt himself and died at that point. At the funeral of Sukhi, an emotional Hardy promised Manu and Buggu to help them to reach London through the Donkey Route.

Donkey route - A Tough Journey

Hardy, Manu, and Buggu, along with three companions, embarked on a journey through Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey. They negotiated a river by swimming underground.  A tough tragedy struck when they got arrested by the authorities in the challenging deserts.

Hardy, Manu and Buggu were able to survive the desserts but the authorities took the lives of the three companions in a desert. Hardy, determined to help, guided Manu and Balli through the challenging desert and snowy mountains.

In the final leg of their journey, they concealed themselves in a car's seat to reach their dream destination.

The London’s Tragedy

After reaching London, Hardy decided to propose to Manu in front of Big Ben. But they 3 got surprised when they saw a statue of Balli in London. After reaching closer to it, they realised that the statue is actually Balli himself. He took odd jobs to survive in the city.

All of them find some odd jobs and start working until authorities arrest Hardy, Manu and Balli as they are residing without a visa.

Love-Story

Hardy was in love with Manu and did all these in the sake of his love. He was impressed by Manu's behaviour of taking a stand for him. During the route, Hardy confesses his feelings to Manu. Manu too shared his feelings to Hardy.

He wanted to propose Manu in front of Big Ben as Manu’s dream to get proposed in front of Big Ben. The chemistry could be seen when Manu was forced to marry a guy to become a resident of England.

They were presented in a court where Hardy told the judge about their situation. The judge asked them to accept that they had a threat from India and hence residing here. As an army officer, Hardy refused to do so.

But Buggu, Manu and Balli decided to reside in London and gave a statement about having the threat from India. A heartbroken Hardy was sent back to India.

25 years later…

Manu was ill by a brain tumour and had only a few months to live. She wanted to die on her own soil. Her 2 best friends Balli and Buggu also showed their desire to get back to their real home.

They approached the ex-old soldier once again. By fooling the authorities, they finally reached India. All 3 friends met their family. Hardy restored Manu's house and he posted a big name plate of Manu in front of it.

He also installed a Big Ben look-alike on the rooftop of her home. He shocked Manu by revealing that he is still single. He proposed to her as per her dream. Emotional Manu said I Do but died in the next moment due to her illness.

Final Thoughts

The movie smartly presented the situation of the 3 friends. Hirani's essence can easily be seen. Shah Rukh Khan showcased why he is referred to as King Khan.

Khan and Pannu's chemistry was all good with Manu's strong character. It was Kochar and Grover that will make you laugh through their comic timings. Kaushal grabbed the screen in his short time.

The movie has reflected on the situation of illegal migrants and their conditions to choose such a route. The journey is quite tough and demands their hard-earned money but gets fooled after reaching their destination.

Hirani has crafted all these points so that a viewer can get easily connected with the characters. It was all in all a nice movie to watch with your family and friends.
