Tarannum Sehdeva - From ‘I Have To’ to ‘I Get To’—My Daily Fitness Affirmation for a Healthier Mindset (Instagram Influencer with 56k followers)

Balance is key. The stricter you are with yourself, the more your body will force you to relapse back.

1. Tell us more about yourself and your profession. Even though most people, to this day, know me by the name Tara, not many can pronounce my real name – Tarannum Sehdeva. Born and brought up in New Delhi, I recently turned 21 and am pursuing medicine. I wouldn’t call it a profession yet, as I'm just an MBBS student currently struggling to accommodate heavy information in my brain. Since childhood, I've been overly enthusiastic about learning biological sciences, especially those that revolve around the human body. The same curiosity, paired with my passion for fitness, has been doing pretty well for me so far. Also, for the past few months, I've been professionally creating content on social media under the same niche. I’m a hustler, and I love to always stay on the move. The more productive I am, the better I feel. In addition to this, being so avid about a healthy lifestyle has gotten me into experimenting with nutritious recipes that aren’t only indulgent but also quick & easy to prepare in minutes. Long story short, I’m just a girl next door who you'd always find baking or reading if she isn’t working out, studying, or sleeping. 2. What is your fitness mantra? It has taken me years of following this lifestyle that I can now give myself this affirmation every day – “I’m doing this not because I have to, but because I get to.” This shift from the “I have to” to the “I get to” mindset is all one needs to start noticing very obvious progress, both mentally and physically. We take our bodies for granted, often overlooking what it does for us daily. Our body is our temple. The only constant place we get to live in this life. And in my opinion, the least we can do in return is to give it back what it needs – taking good care of it. Health & fitness should be considered a reward, rather than assuming it to be a punishment. We invest so much in our external ambience & the houses we live in; decorating, deep cleaning, and detoxifying. Then why not do the same for our bodies? 3. What are some of the major misconceptions about diets and exercise? Oh, how I can go on and on about this question because it can never just be enough. The misconceptions about the fitness industry exist on a much larger scale than its benefits. Now we know exactly why most people are seen trying to stay away from following a healthy lifestyle, or even giving up through the process. It all comes down to the misconceptions, confusions & myths. One major misconception, though, would always be – That one has to be strictly 100% devoted to a routine or diet to see results. That is false. The human body just doesn’t work that way, and that is why most people give up after starting. I promote this ideology on my page for a reason – Balance is key. The stricter you are with yourself, the more your body will force you to relapse back. The more you exhaust yourself, the more your body will pull back. The more you try to starve yourself in order to lose weight, the weaker your body will get. Realizing when your body needs rest AND giving it the same adequately is more important than just being active all the time. This is where the 80-20 rule comes into place instead of staying 100% inflexible with your lifestyle choices. (80-20 Rule: Follow a healthy, active lifestyle 80% of the time and go a little easier on yourself 20% of the time. This gives both your mind and body a break from exertion, helping you stay consistent easily– resulting in more efficient results.) All in all, getting into a health-conscious lifestyle doesn’t mean you should skip on the fun moments in life. Enjoy that piece of cake, go out for drinks once in a while, binge on your favourite chocolate because you’re craving it – as long as it is all in good moderation. 4. How can one maintain a healthy lifestyle? Maintaining a healthy lifestyle isn’t as hard as it sounds. Yes, it might be complicated because of a thousand opinions over the internet today– but if done correctly, progress is inevitable. Here are a few basic tips: Listen to your body. Give it rest when it needs recovery, listen to your cravings, and don’t overexert yourself. Adequate sleep is crucial. Stay hydrated. Water is your best friend. It’ll keep you refreshed and ready to go. Nutrition is as important as your workout. You won’t see changes unless you switch up your dietary habits according to your goals. Stay consistent. When it comes to working out, follow a specific plan instead of random workouts on random days. Showing up every day will go a long way. Last but not least, don’t sacrifice wholesome moments in the name of a healthy lifestyle, and choose your habits wisely.

5. How can one build a successful career in your field? I wouldn’t claim that I’ve built a successful career yet– even though I'm definitely working towards building one for myself. A vague cue for anyone in any field, though, would be being consistent. Anything you do regularly without fail is meant to reward you back (in any way) sooner or later. That is just a fair rule of life.

I noticed the biggest leap when I started focusing on one thing at a time, each & every moment, instead of multitasking. I listed my priorities straight and affirmed what I aimed for – that day, that week, that month, or that year. I pushed myself when the last thing I wanted to do was get out of bed. It will get boring, but in the end, it will be worth it. 6. What is one piece of advice you would like to give someone who wishes to lose weight? Be patient. As someone who has been in the exact same place a few years ago, I know exactly what it feels like. Losing weight can be one of the hardest challenges in the fitness industry– and that is mostly because it’s more of a mental journey than a physical one. The time consumed during the whole process, the sudden plateau phases, the restriction in diet, and most importantly the body image issues– all of these factors are why people give up. Therefore, being patient & consistent throughout is key. 7. How do diets and exercise contribute to overall well-being and happiness? Being a medical student, I’m well aware of the positive effects of diet & exercise in one’s life. In addition to aesthetic benefits, it enhances your physical abilities & mental well-being. Any kind of dedicated movement every day causes the release of certain rewarding hormones in one’s body – which eventually make you feel happy. Euphoric, I’d say. This, in turn, affects other tasks in your day-to-day lives. I’ve never seen a healthy person struggle with other aspects of their viability. Discipline takes you a long way. It levels you up to face anything. The more consistent you are & the better you take care of yourself, the faster you’re going to see progress. This is the thing about fitness – you get out exactly what you give in. Not more, not less. This is what brings stability and balance in life. After this, who won’t be satisfied with their well-being and happiness?
