1. Priyanka, what sparked your passion for chess and led you to pursue it professionally?
I was just 7 years old when I first encountered chess, and the intricate movements of the pieces immediately captivated me. It all began at a summer camp where chess was part of the activities. Within two years, I clinched the U-7 district chess championship, and shortly after, my first Nationals victory. Recognizing my potential, my parents supported my professional pursuit, igniting a journey filled with trophies and triumphs.
2. Reflecting on your career, can you share a pivotal moment where you had to make a significant sacrifice, either on or off the board?
Commitment to chess demands continuous sacrifices. I've foregone many aspects of typical school and college life, missing out on childhood joys and significant family gatherings due to tournament commitments.
3. Given the recent popularity of ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, how do you think it has impacted the perception of chess, particularly among young players?
While I've heard rave reviews about 'The Queen's Gambit', regrettably, I haven't had the chance to watch it yet.
4. Balancing logic and intuition is crucial in chess. How do you navigate this during critical moments in a game?
Striking a balance between logic and intuition is essential. I strive to align my intuitive moves with sound logic, though it's not foolproof. Studying classical games extensively enhances intuition, facilitating quicker decisions in pivotal moments.
5. Drawing from your own journey, what practical advice would you offer to aspiring chess enthusiasts looking to elevate their game?
My advice stems from personal experience: immerse yourself in countless games, whether online or offline, and meticulously analyze them. This process unveils weaknesses, a strategy instrumental in my triumph at the Nationals.
6. If you could possess a superpower specifically for chess, what would it be?
While telepathy seems tempting, I'd opt for teleportation. Imagine effortlessly participating in tournaments worldwide, bypassing visa hassles and travel expenses. Alternatively, unlimited memory would revolutionize preparation, enabling me to outshine even the fiercest competitors.
