Harteerath Singh Ahluwalia – From Ground Zero of India’s Crises, I’ve Learned That Even the Smallest Act Can Save a Life (Director, Hemkunt Foundation)

“You see people lose everything but still hold on to hope — that kind of resilience leaves a mark on you forever.”

1. Can you share your personal journey—what inspired you to dedicate yourself to humanitarian work and advocacy?

Honestly, it all began with a simple question: How can I make a difference in someone’s life? Growing up, I witnessed how small acts of kindness could transform people’s lives, and that idea stayed with me. When I started working with the Hemkunt Foundation, I realized just how much impact even the smallest actions can have. Seeing the struggles faced by marginalized communities made it clear that I couldn’t stand on the sidelines. I wanted to be part of the solution—to help bridge the gap between those eager to help and those in need. That’s what drives me every single day.

2. What role does empathy play in the kind of work you do, especially during crises and relief efforts?

Empathy is everything. It’s the heart of what we do at Hemkunt Foundation. When you’re on the ground during a crisis, you quickly understand that people aren’t just statistics—they’re human beings facing unimaginable hardship. Empathy allows us to connect on a deeper level, making our efforts more meaningful and effective. It keeps us from becoming desensitized to the challenges around us. When you truly care, you push harder, stay longer, and do whatever it takes to help.

3. You've witnessed both suffering and resilience up close—how has that shaped your perspective on life?

It’s been life-changing. You see people who’ve lost everything, yet they still cling to hope. That kind of resilience leaves a lasting impression. It teaches you to be deeply grateful for what you have and pushes you to give back even more. Working with the foundation has shown me that no matter how tough life gets, the human spirit has an incredible capacity to endure and overcome. That’s why I always try to focus on solutions rather than problems—because I’ve seen firsthand how even the smallest glimmer of hope can change lives.

4. What’s one moment from your work that left a lasting personal or emotional impact on you?

I’ll never forget a moment during a flood relief operation when we met a young boy who had just lost his home. Despite his own loss, he was out there helping us distribute food and supplies. When I asked him why, he simply said, “If I can help others, maybe it will make my pain a little less.” That really struck me. It was a powerful reminder that compassion isn’t about how much you have—it’s about what you choose to give. Moments like these keep me grounded and remind me why we do this work.

5. How can young people meaningfully contribute to social causes, even with limited resources?

It’s not about how much you have—it’s about your willingness to make a difference. Start small. Volunteer your time, share important causes on social media, or simply have conversations about the issues that matter. At Hemkunt Foundation, we’ve seen how collective efforts, no matter how modest, can create a ripple effect. Don’t be afraid to take that first step. Your passion and sincerity are your greatest assets.

6. In what ways can digital platforms and storytelling help drive real-world impact today?

Digital platforms are absolute game-changers. They allow us to share authentic stories that move people to action. At Hemkunt Foundation, we’ve seen how a single post can mobilize thousands to volunteer, donate, or raise awareness. Storytelling humanizes the cause—it breaks down complex issues into something people can relate to. When audiences see the human side of a crisis, they’re far more likely to step up and help. That’s why sharing stories truthfully and powerfully is so important.

7. What is your message to those who want to bring change but feel powerless or unsure where to begin?

Don’t overthink it—just start. Whether it’s volunteering for a local drive, sharing a fundraiser, or offering a helping hand, every bit counts. You don’t need to have it all figured out. At Hemkunt Foundation, many of our initiatives began as small ideas that grew because people believed in them. The key is to keep moving forward and stay consistent. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but if you stay committed, you’ll eventually see the impact. Your willingness to act is far more powerful than you realize.
