Gauri B interview
"I don't think one gig has the power to shape your voice and style on stage. Discovering your voice and developing your style takes years of trial and error. "
Q. You moved to Germany at 21 for architecture, and unexpectedly found your comedic voice there. Can you walk us through that pivotal moment when you realized comedy was your true calling?
I think it was the night of my second gig, I smashed it out of the ballpark. I felt an exhilaration I had never felt before, the laughs, the applause, the whoos, the pat on the shoulder from professional comedians afterwards. I knew I was gonna do this for a long time.Q. Your comedy is described as “fresh, dark and culturally relevant.” How do you find the balance between sensitive topics and authentic storytelling?
By staying true to myself, accepting that you cannot please everyone and reminding myself that my job as an artist is to speak my truth and speak it well.Q. In a male-dominated field—and facing casual sexism—how have you remained resilient and true to your voice?
By focusing on the bigger picture.Q. You’ve spoken about the risks of going viral and dealing with trolls. How do you stay mentally grounded amidst both applause and criticism?
That's a skill one develops through time, I believe it's a lifelong process. Having a close knit circle of people you trust and can lean on helps!Q. Your comedic journey began with an impromptu performance at a women’s empowerment event. How did that spontaneous act shape your voice and style on stage?
I don't think one gig has the power to shape your voice and style on stage. Discovering your voice and developing your style takes years of trial and error. It is a continuous process, you evolve as a person and with that so does your voice. However, that first impromptu performance made it clear to me that I am, what they call a "natural" and if I work hard I could actually be good at it.
Q. For many, getting on stage and sharing personal truths through humor takes courage. What would you say to someone who wants to use comedy to express themselves but is afraid to start?
Just do it, don't think. Sign up for that open mic and show up. Rip off the band aid.Bio
