Jaspreet Kaur Kalsi Interview
“I don’t chase trends—I create what feels original and authentic.”
Q. You started your YouTube channel during the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly built a huge following. Tell us your story, what sparked your passion for content creation, and how it began.
I actually began on Instagram before moving to YouTube. By the time I started posting videos there, I already had around four lakh followers on Instagram. That foundation helped me gain momentum quickly. Within just 25 days on YouTube, I had crossed 1 lakh subscribers, and in a year, I reached 7 lakh. But if I trace it back, it all began in school. My mother would braid my sister’s and my hair every morning, and when we were running late, I’d step in to save time by doing my own. That’s how I first developed an interest in hairstyling. Neighbors would compliment me, saying the hairstyles looked like they were done professionally, and that gave me confidence.
Fast forward to February 14, 2020, while everyone was out on dates, I was home, single, and spotted a phone stand. I filmed a video of 10 simple hairstyles. The response was overwhelming, and the comments pushed me to create more.
Then came lockdown, and with my mother’s encouragement, I started posting regularly. Soon, brands reached out, and I realized this passion could also become a career.
Q. Your channel promises “Unique, Authentic, Original.” How do you protect that authenticity when trends or brand deals come knocking?
That phrase actually came from a YouTube comment. I loved it so much I put it in my bio; it captured exactly what I wanted my content to represent.
I’ve never been someone who blindly follows trends. Of course, doing so could bring higher views, but I prefer creating something fresh that people haven’t seen before. That’s what my audience expects from me.
I’ve never been someone who blindly follows trends. Of course, doing so could bring higher views, but I prefer creating something fresh that people haven’t seen before. That’s what my audience expects from me.
When it comes to brand deals, it depends. Some brands, like Nykaa Naturals, gave me complete creative freedom, and that campaign ended up crossing two million views organically. But sometimes, brands want strict product-centered content, which doesn’t always resonate with audiences.
In those cases, I try to balance their requirements with my creativity. And most importantly, I’ll never promote something that doesn’t work for me like a product that once gave me an allergy. As creators, we owe honesty to both the brand and the audience.
Q. You’ve grown a loyal audience beyond views. How do you measure real engagement, and what keeps your community connected?
I’ve learned not to tie my worth to likes or views. Engagement can fluctuate, but what matters is staying true to your craft. For me, real engagement is when people recognize me at concerts, malls, or events and say, “I love your hairstyles,” or when fans make sketches and edits of me. That kind of love goes beyond numbers.
Even during tough times—like when I was on bed rest for eight months and couldn’t post—people remembered me. When I returned, they told me, “You were the one who started hairstyles with crystals and flowers.” That’s when I realized impact lasts longer than algorithms.
Q. What were the biggest challenges when launching Virasat Hair, from sourcing, tech, or something else, and what advice would you give creators starting their own products?
The journey to Virasat Hair actually began years earlier with Jewellery Love by Jaspreet Kalsi, a small online jewelry business I ran with my sister. It helped us manage college expenses and taught me the basics of selling online.
When we noticed that people were confused between jewelry and hair accessories, we decided to create a separate brand, Virasat Hair, dedicated entirely to hair accessories. Because my face was already associated with it, customers trusted that the products were genuine.
The biggest challenge was patience. Building a business means investing in websites, sourcing, and marketing without expecting immediate returns. My advice to creators is simple: leverage your audience, but don’t compromise on quality. If your product is genuinely good, people will come back. Profit takes time, but patience pays off.
Q. Many creators struggle with burnout or creative blocks. How do you keep ideas fresh and avoid losing momentum?
I face creative blocks, too. That’s why I keep a diary. On days when I feel inspired, I write down every idea. Later, when I hit a block, I revisit those notes and almost always find something to spark me again.
I also brainstorm with my family, especially my mother and sister, who are both very creative. Sometimes just talking through an idea with them gives me clarity. And yes, I believe in manifestation. When you put your ideas out there with intent, the universe finds a way to bring them alive.
Q. Looking ahead, what are you most excited to try next, and what message would you like to leave for your audience?
I want to make Virasat Hair a household name in India. That’s my biggest dream right now. Content-wise, I’m enjoying experimenting with affordable décor and surprise videos, like when I decorated a small space for my sister’s birthday, and it got over 95 lakh views on YouTube.
As for my audience, I just want to say thank you. Your comments and support genuinely brighten my day, especially when I’m feeling low. I try to give back through giveaways because I know that every time you use something I gifted, you’ll think of me, and that thought makes me so happy.
