Olesia Glants Interview
"Music helps people dance, laugh, and enjoy life together."
Q. How did your journey in music begin, and why did you choose singing over other performing arts?
I went to music school when I was five years old, and I studied there until middle school. After that, I went to music college because it is normal to continue after music school. My mom brought me to music school when I was very small. I liked the music teacher more than the dancing teacher because she was very open and friendly. At that age, I connected more with people who smiled at me and made me feel comfortable. That is why I started singing instead of dancing, acting, or doing other performances.Q. Can you tell us about your big band project and your experience performing with live musicians?
This big band project came from my wish to perform with live musicians again because I used to perform with them before. I finished conservatory, and I was very passionate about not being alone on stage with the big band. We created this project, and we have already done around seven concerts. Another concert is about to happen in Dubai. Right now, Dubai is going through a difficult situation, but we are still moving forward. We are trying to continue this concept and give more solo concerts.Q. How do you choose songs or collaborations, and can you tell us about your recent project with the French DJ?
I listened to different demos because many people sell demos online. At one point in my life, I became very passionate about music, so I started collecting these demos and turning them into songs. Recently, we released another song through a collaboration with a French ex-pilot who is now trying himself as a DJ in Paris. He sent me this demo one year ago, and I liked it immediately. Two weeks ago, I went to Paris to complete the collaboration and sign the release for this beautiful song. I simply liked the music, nothing more and nothing less.
Q. How did the piano version of your song come about, and what inspired you to change the original deep house style?
It was a very funny situation because I did not plan to create it as just a cover song. It was originally a deep house track, and I promoted it as deep house music. I created an unbelievable music video, and the song was promoted on Dubai radio. Later, it was supposed to go to Dubai TV. When they heard the song, they said they could not take it to the official Dubai One TV program because it sounded too dark, and they did not want to promote it in that style. That is why I called my pianist friend and asked him to help me play it on piano. I sent him the motifs, and that is how the piano version happened.
Q. Can you tell us about your upcoming Jazz Night concert in Dubai and what audiences can expect from the performance?
I mentioned before that another concert is happening this April at TODA Madinat Jumeirah. It will be Jazz Night with Olesia Glants and Big Band. We are doing this concert to support entertainers and remind people that we are still here, still working hard, and still enjoying life.We continue our artistic journey. Honestly, during the last concert there, people stood up at the end because we created unforgettable memories. I understand that people enjoy when we are open, fun, joking, dancing, and enjoying life together during the performance. This time, the concert will last two hours, so it is going to be even more fun.
Q. How do you balance being a performer and a songwriter, and which role has been more challenging for you?
For now, I can say that I have been more successful as a performer and pianist than as a songwriter. It is very difficult to succeed as a songwriter today because you must be talented not only as a songwriter but also as a creator, communicator, and musician. You also need to build the right environment and meet the right people who can help your talent and music grow. Success does not happen just because you write one good song and suddenly everything changes. It is very hard to balance everything. I know many friends who left performing because they wanted to focus only on making music, but I do not think that is the best way. You need to do everything together because you never know what can take your career to another level.
Q. How have your experiences as a Ukrainian singer and living in an international environment influenced your mindset and music career?
I am in a very difficult situation as a singer from Ukraine. First of all, we had war in Ukraine, and now I see some similar situations in Dubai. I think this experience made me stronger because I learned to take many things more easily. I do not focus too much on things that can change my mood or motivation.I believe it is better to act than to overthink because if you never try, you will regret it more later. Of course, the international world affected me a lot. I no longer see Ukrainian culture in the same way as before because I have met many different people, including successful and famous artists. When you meet international people every day, listen to international music, and hear international stories, your mindset changes. It helps you grow and understand other people’s tastes as well.
