Piper Nelson Interview
"At the time, it felt risky, but looking back, it filled a unique space within creative makeup content and stood out because it was unexpected."
Q. For those discovering you for the first time, how would you introduce Piper Nelson, both as an artist and as a creator?
I’m a self-taught creative makeup artist and content creator based in Tempe, Arizona. Growing up, I dreamed of becoming a beauty influencer like the creators I constantly watched online, but I never felt like it was “for me.” I was bullied throughout my childhood, which shattered my self-confidence. I initially turned to makeup to conform and hide my insecurities, but over time, that passion evolved into a way to express myself and stand out. While I was in college, I discovered the world of creative makeup and instantly became obsessed. I’ve always loved all forms of art, and creative makeup combined painting, sculpting, drawing, and storytelling in a way that showed me the possibilities were endless. In July 2019, I decided to seriously pursue content creation and launched my social media accounts. Over the past six and a half years, my style has evolved through many different eras, but the one constant has always been my incredibly supportive community.
Q. You’re known for dramatic transformations and bold concepts. Where do you usually draw inspiration from—films, art history, emotions, or everyday life?
Honestly, I draw inspiration from every aspect of my life—childhood nostalgia, pop culture, social media trends, TV shows and movies, emotional highs and lows, and even paintings I’ve seen hanging in local restaurants. I’m constantly asking myself, “How can I translate that into a makeup look?” no matter where I am or what I’m experiencing.I love experimenting with new and sometimes unusual ideas while balancing what I personally enjoy creating with what my audience enjoys watching.
Q. Your content often shows both polished results and behind-the-scenes moments. Why is it important for you to show the process, not just perfection?
I first started creating content, and I hated showing the “messy middle,” so I only shared before-and-after transformations. Over time, I realized my perfectionism was holding me back and that perfection itself was impossible to achieve. As I worked on healing that mindset, I started to appreciate the beauty of the journey, including the mistakes along the way. Eventually, I began sharing more process-focused content and was surprised by how positively people responded. I realized I was personally craving less of the endless highlight reel online and found comfort in seeing other creators’ mistakes and perseverance. Now, my favorite content to create is the unpolished, behind-the-scenes footage because it reflects who I really am, not just a curated version of myself. It also allows me to connect with my community in a much more meaningful way.
Q. Looking back, was there a post or moment that truly changed your trajectory as a creator? What made it different?
After about a year and a half of posting creative makeup online, I finally felt confident enough to create fully face-painted looks. Around the same time, I had just quit my full-time job to pursue content creation seriously. Since Christmas is my favorite holiday, I wanted to create a full holiday series, but I felt uninspired by the typical concepts people usually associate with Christmas. I had always loved spooky and unconventional themes, but until then, I mainly shared “prettier” creative makeup looks online. That’s when I decided to launch a “Creepy Christmas” series, even though I wasn’t sure how people would respond because I hadn’t seen anyone else doing something similar.
The first few looks performed really well, but the third video in the series completely changed everything. One video reached over 20 million views in a very short time and dramatically boosted my account. Before that, most of my videos averaged between 3,000 and 7,000 views. Suddenly, I was regularly getting 20,000 to 40,000 views, and several videos from the series surpassed one million views.
That moment was important because it was the first time I stopped chasing trends or copying what worked for other creators and focused entirely on what I genuinely wanted to create. At the time, it felt risky, but looking back, it filled a unique space within creative makeup content and stood out because it was unexpected. Since then, I’ve tried to trust my intuition more, take creative risks, and only participate in trends when I truly feel inspired by them.
Q. If you had to recreate one iconic character or look again purely for fun, with no pressure, who would it be and why?
I would probably recreate my Grinch look from 2020. The more recognizable a character is, the harder it becomes to recreate them accurately without unintentionally making them look off or uncanny. People know exactly what those characters are supposed to look like, so there’s a lot of pressure to get every detail right. That look was especially meaningful to me because it was the first time I attempted a more screen-accurate character design, and I also created my own prosthetic pieces, which was completely new for me at the time. My skills have evolved so much since then, and I think it would be really interesting and fun to see how closely I could recreate the movie version now.
