Bulbul Lakhmna is a Hyderabad-based luxury makeup artist and founder of Bulbul Lakhmna Artistry, specializing in bridal, beauty, and editorial makeup. In this interview, she shares her philosophy of enhancing natural beauty, creating timeless looks, and helping every client feel confident, elegant, and authentically themselves.
Q. For those discovering your work for the first time, tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to become a makeup artist?
What started as a passion for makeup gradually turned into a career I truly love. I still feel the same excitement every time someone trusts me to be a part of one of the most important moments of their life.
I believe makeup should enhance your features, not hide them. My goal has always been to create looks that are timeless, elegant, and authentically you.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with brides, editorial campaigns, beauty brands, and clients from different parts of the world. Every face teaches me something new, and that continuous learning is what keeps me inspired.
Q. Your portfolio spans beauty, editorial, and luxury bridal makeup. How do you adapt your creative approach for each of these worlds?
I genuinely enjoy every aspect of my work because each one allows me to express my creativity in a different way. Whether it’s a bride’s biggest day, a beauty campaign, or an editorial shoot, I approach each project with a fresh perspective.
Luxury bridal makeup is deeply personal. It’s about understanding the bride her personality, traditions, outfit, jewellery, and how she wants to remember herself years later. My goal is always to make her feel effortlessly beautiful rather than overly made up.
Editorial makeup gives me complete creative freedom. It’s where I can experiment with textures, colours, shapes, and concepts that challenge conventional beauty.
Beauty work focuses on flawless skin, precision, and creating makeup that feels aspirational yet achievable.
No matter the occasion, my focus is always on enhancing natural beauty and creating looks that feel timeless.
Q. You’ve travelled globally for your work. How have different cultures and beauty traditions influenced your artistry?
Travel has taught me that beauty is wonderfully subjective.
Every culture celebrates different features. Some love luminous skin, others celebrate bold eyes, sculpted features, or vibrant colours. Experiencing these perspectives has made me a much more versatile artist.
It has also reinforced something I strongly believe: there isn’t one definition of beauty. My role is never to fit someone into a trend, but to understand what beauty means to them and bring that vision to life.
Q. Luxury bridal makeup is about more than just looking beautiful. How do you ensure a bride feels confident and authentic on her big day?
Every bride who sits in my chair is different, and that’s something I truly love about my work. Before I even begin with the makeup, I like to understand her personality, her style, and how she wants to feel on her wedding day.
I never believe in following the same formula for every bride. My goal is that when she looks in the mirror, she feels like the best version of herself confident, beautiful, and completely comfortable in her own skin. To me, that’s what truly defines luxury bridal makeup.
For me, the biggest compliment is when a bride says, “I still look like me.” That’s exactly what I strive for with every bride I work with.
I think that says a lot about my work and the kind of artist I am.
Q. Editorial makeup often pushes creative boundaries. What excites you most about working on editorial shoots?
Editorial work allows me to think beyond beauty.
It’s where makeup becomes storytelling. Every shoot has a mood, an emotion, or a message, and I love translating that into makeup.
It also pushes me out of my comfort zone, I get to experiment with colour, texture, and unconventional makeup techniques.
Q. Every face tells a different story. How do you balance enhancing natural features while reflecting a client’s personality?
I never believe in applying the same makeup to every face.
I study each client’s bone structure, skin texture, features, and personality before I begin. Someone who is naturally soft and understated shouldn’t suddenly feel like a different person because they’re wearing makeup.
My philosophy has always been to let the person shine before the makeup does. Good makeup should complement someone’s individuality, not overpower it.
Q. Looking ahead, how do you see the beauty industry evolving over the next few years?
I think we’re moving towards a more thoughtful approach to beauty.
Clients today are looking for artists who understand skin, inclusivity, longevity, and personalization rather than simply following trends. People are slowly moving away from wanting to look like someone else and are embracing makeup that enhances their own features. Brides today are looking for artists who understand their vision, their skin, and their personality not someone who gives everyone the same look.
And I also see technology playing a bigger role, but I believe artistry, human connection, and experience will always remain irreplaceable.
For me, makeup has always been about making someone feel confident, beautiful, and comfortable in their own skin. I think that’s where the future of beauty lies: creating looks that are personal, wearable, and uniquely yours.
Q. On a lighter note, if you could only keep three makeup products in your kit forever, which ones would they be and why?
That’s a tough one! But if I had to choose, it would be:
A cream lip and cheek tint: I love products that are versatile. A good cream formula instantly adds warmth and freshness to the face and can be used on both the lips and cheeks for a beautifully cohesive look.
Kohl: It’s a timeless staple in my kit. Whether it’s a soft smudged look or a bold, smoky eye, kohl has the power to completely transform the eyes. It’s one product I simply can’t imagine working without.
Mascara: No makeup look ever feels complete without beautifully defined lashes. Mascara instantly opens up the eyes, adds dimension, and brings the entire look together with minimal effort.
Those three products are proof that you don’t need an overflowing makeup bag to create beautiful, impactful looks.
Q. If you could collaborate with any celebrity, fashion house, or photographer in the world, who would it be and why?
If I could collaborate with any fashion house, it would undoubtedly be Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
The signature smoky kohl eyes, radiant skin, and understated elegance create a look that’s both powerful and effortless. It’s not about following trends it’s about creating an identity that people instantly associate with his brand, and I find that incredibly inspiring as a makeup artist.
