Can involvement of Students in Politics bring in positive changes

Politics, for the layman, can be described as a tool or a means used to run the government over a province and rule its people. Serving the people and the society is considered as the motive behind politics. A politician is normally characterized as a tactical administrator, skilled and experienced strategist who works for the welfare of the society and its people. Politics as of now evolved from monarchy and has a history that can be traced back to a number of wars and movements in the past.

India, being the 7th largest nation plays an influential and prominent role as one of the biggest powers of world. Also being a country which fought more than 150 years for its freedom from colonialism India now has one of the best political structures in the world. The administrative masterminds of that period were able to install democracy and design its own constitution within the initial years of freedom is nothing short of an achievement to be proud of. The struggle that led the long way to freedom played a major role in deciding the democratic rulers of the country. A nation can be called completely democratic only if it had multiple number of political parties contesting the elections and complete freedom for citizens of the country to cast their vote to their candidate. The parties who led the freedom struggle from front became the first competing parties in elections.

India is also second in terms population, at around 130 crores and the nation with the most number of youngsters and most number of students. The contribution of youngsters in the freedom struggle was integral to the outcome . They left their education from British controlled colleges and institutions, walked into streets and took part in the fight for independence. Politics is something which can’t b taught or studied. It can only be learned and acquired by chiseling the skills mentality and through own experience. The future of a nation and the power to reframe its future always lies in the hands of youngsters of the country where politics is of no exception. This prevails as the major reason behind the idea of campus politics and setting up the wing of youngsters of he institution to work under a political party of their province.

The element of campus politics is considered to be advantageous and effective as it will help in bringing out the true and efficient leaders within the youngsters. It even provides them with exposure to the realities of politics. All the necessary elements related to campus politics are most probably exercised under the basic pillars of democracy. It makes them more disciplined and enhance their leadership qualities. It remains a challenge and motivates them to take up initiatives and work for the welfare of the institution. Moreover necessary support and assistance will be provided by the political parties of the region.

Politics is not all about serving the society or people. The change and development it can make in one will reflect in thousand others. Politics is also about altering one’s perspective and views on society and what and where change is necessary. It urges him to become the change and inspire others with his actions.

Even though politics acts as a tool that accelerates development and growth and enables stability inside its province, mismanagement or power in wrong hands can make politics deadly. Politics is something which when defined and understood in a wrong way makes it lethal and dangerous. Hereby campus politics among students and youngsters are likely to get easily influenced and brutally affected by all that is wrong with the current political situation . Campus politics despite its advantages will spread hatred and develops enmity among students. This often gets out of control and can lead to violence and even deaths. It only takes one misguided step to compromise the very institutions of political power.

Campus politics acts as a stepping stone towards the pathway of real politics. There may be thousand aspirants but only the fittest players get to enter into the real arena. Well managed participation of students and youngsters for a cause is enough to make huge changes. The protest of students in J&K in 2017 serves as an example. The way student unions of JNU protested against their professor who was charged for sexual assault recently proves the worth of existential of these student unions when college authorities turn a blind eye towards these issues. Last but not the least, January 2017 witnessed a huge student protest in parts of south India especially Tamil Nadu where they protested against the ban of ‘Jallikkattu’ which is initially a game of taming the bull and was part of their culture. These protests were leaderless and a lot of student unions from various parts of South India took part in the protest. After the protest for Srilankan Tamils, this was the biggest protest put up by youngsters against the verdict and the plea submitted by PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Moreover campus politics enables the students to question the management of the institution itself for improper actions and moves that hamper student community. There aren’t any restrictions that it should work and serve only the institution they can take initiatives for social service and welfare programs.
As the principles of democracy are followed and exercised in elections, respecting the opinions of others matters the most. A completely democratic policy, along with good and efficient leaders, proper institutional management eliminating violence, support and assistance from the party and most importantly the participation of students is enough to develop the political process and accelerate the mechanism of greater growth.
