Domestic Violence - A Hidden Pandemic

The outbreak of the coronavirus, the recent pandemic has shown us the power of nature and the actual power of humans in dealing with a non-visible microorganism. We, the great homo-sapiens, who leave no stone unturned in destroying big forests, trees and mountains have been hit strongly by an invisible virus.

All it took was a virus to make us more humane. Wait!, has the virus turned us more humane? Or has it just taught us how to maintain cleanliness, hygiene and distance?

I think the latter one will be a plausible answer because we have just learnt how to take care of the environment, bearing the brunt from the virus, but still, we haven’t learnt how to take care of our wives, daughters and mothers- and all the women in our society.

There is news about the fall in rape cases, eve-teasing against women as all people have been locked inside their homes and there are no wanderers outside. But, there isn’t any coverage, or enough coverage, about the increasing cases of domestic violence in this pandemic.

Here's a Question -

Is it right if the men are not having a chance to show their cruelty outside their homes so it gives them a right to do so inside? Are we men born to unleash and blight the modesty of the women? Do we have an answer? Does our society permit anyone to do so?

If the response to that question is a yes- then women too should beat their husbands with iron rods or bare hands because they too are strong as their male counterparts. Sounds terrifying, doesn't it? Well, that is what happens to women. No one deserves to be treated that way, it is inhumane.

Moreover, some people just witness such cruelty and horror right before their eyes without taking any action against domestic violence. A report says that there is an unprecedented rise in the number of calls received by NCW (National Commission For Women) regarding domestic violence.

It has been observed that owing to the lockdown, everyone has suffered mentally because of loss of income and jobs. None of us was prepared for this time, we didn’t have any plans or contingency reserves to deal with such hard times.

As a result, being depressed and unable to search for an outlet of anger, men resort to beating the silent members of our families to freshen their minds.

Women toil all day and night, looking after their children and families, fulfilling the demands of everyone. There was a 3-month break for all of us except our mothers, they don’t have a day off. Still, they have to bear the ferocious brunt of our anger outlet. Is it humane?

The domestic violence is not only a physical one, but it is mental too. Cases show that women are tortured to sell or mortgage their jewellery for arranging finance for their families. They suffer from injuries during the non-consensual sex- the sex that they are not willing to be involved in but have to succumb to the intentions of their husbands.

Just to keep a man happy, women have been traumatised and oppressed for years. This practice of constantly using them for our needs or outlets of anger and joys is a greater pandemic than COVID-19, albeit it hasn’t got the coverage it needed yet.

We have been demolishing our earth for years, but whenever earth hit back, we are nowhere to be seen, take the current example. Are we prepared for the time when women will hit back to society? The D-Day isn’t far yet. It depends on us to become humane towards every creature on this beautiful planet.

We should not marginalise women as weaker or blemished part of our society. Everyone has a life to live, and every life is to be lived. In this hard time, we must stand together, stand to take the pledge to treat everyone as equal, be it an aunt, a microorganism, a girl or a boy.

Everyone has a life to live, and every life is to be lived.
