Most Humor Comes Out of Awareness - Mcjoel Cudjoe (Comedian)

Mcjoel Cudjoe

Mcjoel Cudjoe is a Ghanian - Uk based comedian, born on 9th August 2000 in the Netherlands but was bred in Ghana for some time and moved to the Uk to study. Both his dad and mom are Ghanaian.

1. How and when did you choose comedy as a career?

I’ve been doing comedy for almost two years now. It wasn’t something I planned. Let me tell you this story. I was bored at home one afternoon so I made this short clip and posted on my WhatsApp story.

The next day I realized a lot of people had actually shared it. I decided to take it a bit seriously and reached out to one of my friends. I really see him as a brother, his name is Prince Ruben. He helped me with the shooting and editing of my videos and gradually I got to evolve to where I am now by the grace of God.

2. What type of content do you enjoy producing the most and is the most challenging?

Honestly, I don’t really have a specific type of content I create. I normally create content that I feel people can definitely relate to. The most challenging I would say is developing characters and creating a backstory for each and every one of them.

3. Do you prefer digital as a medium or do you enjoy doing live gigs more and why?

I’ve done just a few gigs but took a break. I still feel I need to work on myself a bit more before I take the mic.

But I’m pretty sure I’m gonna prefer live gigs to digital because there’s a huge difference and it actually feels good to physically see people laugh and smile from jokes you make instead of being limited to reading just the comments on social media.

4. People, who are interested in taking up stand-up comedy as a profession, do they need a funny bone or they can develop one?

Forget what you've been told about whether or not you're funny. Some people are shy and socially awkward, and so they're told they're not funny. Yet some of the best comedians are shy and socially awkward.

Most humor comes out of awareness, and if you are willing to be open-minded enough to take in what is around you, it is possible to turn that into something funny.

5. How stable is being a stand-up comedian as a profession in Your Country? And what is the future of this profession?

As a stand-up comedian in the Uk. I would say stability depends on how long you could stay creative and authentic. The more you are able to get the audience to relate with you, the more gigs you get.

6. What impact do you want to make in this world?

I just want to be able to reach as many people as I can with my comedy. I feel at this point, the world needs more laugh than ever.

Also, I hope what I do can inspire my generation and the next to believe in their own dreams and that you can do anything you set your mind to by most importantly putting God first and he won’t let you down.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

I love novels, my favorite at the moment is “Half Of A Yellow Sun” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The reason why I love it is mainly because of how it talks about love, loss, and war in the post-independence of Africa. It’s always good to be enlightened and aware of your roots
