Keep Creating Keep Growing and Sometimes Take a Break Too - Pinimal Posters

Graphic designing has a vast spectrum and their lot of sections and expertise in it....but we can largely break it into three groups keeping in the Indian market and practical usage in mind

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Hi, So my name is Proloy (Loy) and I grew up in a small town called Barrackpore, just outskirts of kolkata...done all my schooling and college here itself...while in college I explored few fields from film making to photography to teaching in an NGO....after finishing my degree in computer application...

I kindly got an opportunity for a graphic designer job interview in Bangalore in a big MNC... Although I was never much serious about it I did manage to crack the interview. I always thought this was a temporary thing that I am doing but while on the job I really started to enjoy the creative process and developed a passion for design.

2. When did you decide you wanted to be a Digital creator/illustrator?

So in the first few months of my job I really had some free office time...and my office had lots of rules like employees cannot bring phones inside the office and lot of website restrictions...like no Facebook or youtube...one of the sites that were available was pinterest...and I discovered minimal posters there and was immediately fascinated by the whole idea of representation of ideas and stories in very simple minimal and clever ways...

Since I had a lot of free time I decided to make minimal posters about movies at first and then about daily life things that we can relate and started to upload them in the Facebook page called Pinimal posters

Some of my early series were really loved by the internet like on 90s nostalgia, school life etc... probably one of the first poster series to get viral.

3. What is a role and scope of work for a graphic designer?

Graphic designing has a vast spectrum and their lot of sections and expertise in it....but we can largely break it into three groups keeping in the Indian market and practical usage in mind

Communication design: All social media creatives, ads banners, flyers posters... basically everything that communicates particular information to the customers

Logo and branding: From  logo design to the complete brand visual of the product

UI/UX: Again this also covers a huge spectrum and non-designers can also have a career in this, but being a graphic designer really helps you understand various UI and UX(mostly UI) principles and concept...and this is also one of the highest paying jobs around the world.

Designers especially who are in the early stages of the career should explore all of them and then decide which they enjoy the most doing.

4. Where do you get inspired to create art?

I get inspired by looking at other art and there are tons and tons of good work you can find on the internet...other than that movies and music also serve as my inspiration...

5. Who is your favourite artist and why?

I get inspired by a lot of filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarintino, Anurag Kashyap, Satyajit Ray...I watch a lot of their interviews and try to understand their creative process.

In terms of design and digital content...Chris Doe, Pablo Rochat, Visualizevalue Sg_posters are my favourite.

6. What is your idea of success or your mantra in life?

Keep creating keep growing and sometimes take a break too.

7. Which are some of the tools and Softwares that a graphic designer must be aware of?

Photoshop, illustrator

8. What kind of book do you prefer to read?

I don't read many books....but I do watch a lot of informative videos and tutorials and listen to podcasts on design, films and on various topics.
