Kolkata.

There are many villages of Assam which are famous for art

Saulkuchi Village:
Saulkuchi is located 35km away from
Guwahati. It is famous for three unique silks Muga (golden silk), white pat and
warm eri silks. There are about 5,000 families of Saulkuchi who are involved in
the weaving industry. So, it is known as silk village of Assam.
The silk clothes are woven in such a way that they depict
the culture, tradition and flora and fauna of Assam. The weavers perform Ahinsa
silk breeding in which they do not kill the silk moth present in the cocoon.
First they separate the moth and then boil the cocoon.
Mahatma Gandhi said that the residents of the village are
born weavers. Our former President Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was also mesmerized
by seeing the unique silk clothes of Saulkuchi.
Kaziranga National Park:
Kaziranga National Park is located
193 km away from Guwahati which has 430 square km in area. The park is famous
for one horned rhinoceros and as tiger reverse. There are approx. 2400 rhinos
according to 2018 census. It is also famous as bird life sanctuary.
It is also a home for sambar, wild Asiatic water buffalo,
Indian elephants, hog deer, wild boar, Royal Bengal Tiger, and eastern swamp
deer. This is the best place for animal lovers.
Ranthali:
Ranthali is 120km away from Guwahati and 76km away
from Kaziranga National Park. It is famous for exotic traditional hand-made
Assamese jewellery. The craftsmen who design jewelries called Hoonaries. The
jewellry are made in such a way that it depict musical instruments, nature and
daily life objects of Ranthali.
Hajo:
Hajo is 35kms away from Guwahati and 15kms away from
Saulkuchi. It is a pilgrimage centre of Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist. Hajo is
known as a village in harmony. Hayagriva Madhava Temple (for Hindu) and Poa
Mecca (for Muslim) are two famous pilgrimage centres of Hajo.
Hajo is also famous for Black Soft Shell Turtles; these
unique species are found only in Assam. In 2002 these turtles were declared as
extinct species. There are 20 species of soft and hard shell turtles in Hajo.
Many NGOs came forward to save the turtles.
They incubate the eggs of turtles in the incubator and when they grow up the devotees leave them in the pond of as a divine offering. Turtles are believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Hajo is also famous for brass making crafts.
Sarthebai:
Sarthebari is located 80 km away from Guwahati. It
is famous for Bell Metal (an alloy of Copper and Tin) locally known as Kah. The
Bell Metal industry is the second largest handicraft industry of Assam. Bell
Metal is used to make daily use of objects like utensils for water storage.
Dadara:
Dadara is located 25 km away from Guwahati. It is
famous for Greater Adjutant Stork (hargila) which is an endangered species.
Dadara has the largest nestling colony with 500 nests made by Hargila Army ( an
army of Women) led by Poornima Devi Barman to save the Greater Adjutant Storks.
Nestling colony has a favourable environment required for endangered species.
Nalbari area of lower Assam:
Nalbari area of lower Assam is
in the radius of 80km from Guwahati. It is famous for making Japi (Assamee hat)
woven from jute. It is also famous for the famous traditional festival called
Rangali Bihu which is organised on 14-15 April every year.
Kamrup-Kamakhya Temple:
Kamrup-Kamakhya temple is located in
Guwahati. It is a temple of goddess Kamakhaya and one of the 51 Shakti Pithas.
It is the main pilgrimage centre for Hindus. The goddess is the main goddess of
Garo and khasi people, Assam’s main tribal communities.
Majuli:
Majuli is located 347 kms from Guwahati. It is a
pollution free fresh water island in the Bramhaputra River and is considered as
the world’s largest river island, mostly inhabited by tribal communities. This
is the most beautiful and culture rich place of Assam.
Barpeta:
Barpeta is located 98km from Guwahati. It is
residence of vaishnative satras so, called Satra nagari means land of satras.
It is also a land of ponds. It is a gateway to Manas National park famous for
elephants and is situated at Manas River.
