1. Tell us about your background and journey.
I was born in Voorhees, New Jersey but moved to Terre Haute, Indiana at a young age. Growing up in the midwest, I learned my core values which are that faith, family, and how you treat others is a number one priority before anything else.
I grew up dancing and performing my entire life, but never felt that there was enough opportunity in the arts for what I wanted to do in my hometown.
After graduating from college at Indiana University with a Psychology and Journalism degree, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue the entertainment industry as an on-camera host and talent. In my four years in Los Angeles, I’ve faced many obstacles but that is where you learn the most.
I never wanted to be too comfortable or settle in my life, and moving to Los Angeles on my own was the challenge I craved. I’ve learned that rejection builds character, and makes you work harder.
Being kind goes a long way, and I’m grateful for the midwest values that were instilled in me because they keep me grounded and aware of what is truly important at the end of the day.
2. What led you to start your page on Instagram and what is it about?
Around the time that I moved to Los Angeles, creating an online presence and brand was getting really popular. I went from barely using Instagram to quickly learning about photography, filming and editing my own content, and how to connect to an audience.
I was always intrigued by the fashion and lifestyle space and was auditioning for hosting positions with other brands when I realized I could be creating the same type of content for myself.
That led me to start my blog and dive more into the fashion and lifestyle space. I love having my own business because it feels personal and something that I can build from the ground up.
3. How would you distinguish the term blogger from an influencer?
Gosh, to be honest, I struggle with the term influencer because it has lost its true meaning over the years and is now connected to the stigma of people who live their lives on their phones and have lost touch with reality. I don’t support that.
To those who are building an online presence or are public figures, who you are online needs to reflect who you are offline. Whether you have a blog or not, it’s imperative to stay true to yourself and ‘influence’ others in a positive way.
If you have a social presence where others are following your journey, there is a responsibility there. When I was a teenager, I often followed several female public figures and looked up to them.
And now more than ever, there’s so much focus on the online world and young girls are pressured more than ever to look or act a certain way. It’s important to be aware of the influence you have on those who may be looking up to you and be conscious of the message you are portraying on your platform.
4. What do you think influences consumer behavior?
There can be so many different factors- social, cultural, and personal. But for me, I’ve found that the key to building a brand that an audience can trust is relatability.
5. What is your idea of success or your mantra in life?
I have a few (these are my favorite!)
1) Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.
2) When you doubt your power, you give power to your doubts. and
3) Life is about relationships, and the rest is just detail
6. How can someone become a successful social media influencer?
Stay true to yourself, and embrace the things that make you unique. Anytime you find yourself getting caught up in what others are doing, it takes the joy out of the process. People connect to relatability and can see if you’re not being yourself.
7. Which is your favorite book and why?
Attached by Amir Levine- it’s helped me so much in understanding my interpersonal relationships, and in my opinion, is something everyone should read.
