Aashika US - I Got Recognised by Various TV Channels (Dancer)

My passion for dance as I remember started as soon as I learnt to walk. Started at 3 with Classical Training and after my Post graduation in Microbiology, I thought of pursuing a PhD in Microbiology.

But my passion and love for dancing drove me to take dance as a full-time Profession and started working towards it and this decision changed my life as a Dancer.

1.Tell us more about your background and journey.

Started dancing as a Child, Formally trained in Bharathanatyam & Kathak for 20years under the able guidance of Vidwan Narayan, Late Ravidathaar, Vidushi Rajeshwari & Vidushi Shreelatha.

Classical dance forms always have my heart but being versatile was also something that was in my charts. Started exploring Western forms and the journey initially was very challenging. That's what pushed me to train in Jazz, Ballet and Contemporary and I still continue to keep training on both fronts and I believe learning is never-ending and there is so much more to experience.

I got recognised by various TV channels & been awarded Hindustan Gagan Gourav & Poorna Prajna Bhooshan awards in the year 2016 & 2019 and won in various state & district level dance competitions.

By God's grace and support from my people now I stand here with my own trust called Dance Acoustics.

When did you first decide you wanted to pursue dancing and how did you start?

My passion for dance as I remember started as soon as I learnt to walk. Started at 3 with Classical Training and after my Post graduation in Microbiology, I thought of pursuing a PhD in Microbiology.

But my passion and love for dancing drove me to take dance as a full-time Profession and started working towards it and this decision changed my life as a Dancer. There is no happiness better than being happy doing the things you love.

Who is your favourite dancer and why?

There are many on my list. But, your Guru will always be your favourite and best mentor. Hariharan, now the co-founder of HighonheelsBangalore and Dance Acoustics. He introduced me to Dancing from another perspective and also one of the big reason for all my accomplishments.

Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a dancer?

Dance is extremely satisfactory, it is therapeutic. You get to do what you love with the flow of creative thinking. There has been a lot of exposure in terms of Dance as a career option in recent days and it's growing.

You can choose to be a Dancer for various shows and performances, collaborations. You can be a Dance teacher at schools, colleges, dance community studios, workshops and Coaching. You can be a choreographer for small and big events (wedding, competition, performances) or even in the Entertainment Industry.

Apart from the above, one who understands dance can collaborate with brands for product promotion like clothing designer, videography/photography and so on. You also get to work with various celebrities & perform at bigger platforms to showcase your work and build your network.

So yes, dance has a lot to offer if you can commit yourself to it❤️

Is format training required or can one train themselves purely based on talent?

If you have to become a teacher/ doctor, there is a process, you spend 20+ years studying to qualify and become one. DANCE is also a discipline that requires studying and practice. Especially forms that we train in - Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary, these have the vocabulary and it requires formal training.

High on heels / Dance Acoustics we always follow technical training with certain format/syllabus.

What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

Dance is a beautiful art form. If dancing is your thing, please spend time and work on it. Dancing from the body is one thing but Dancing from your heart, being aware and spreading the right information is crucial which every individual should focus.

Understand the importance of commitment and investment. Fame is good but if it's temporary it's no good. So focus on what you want and go behind it, it takes a lot but in the end, it's worth it.

Which is your favourite book & why?

Normally I don't read books rather I would refer a lot of dance related articles & biographies.
