Michael's interest in film began in elementary school when he would run the film projectors for both classroom and extra curricular presentations. After borrowing a book on theatrical lighting design from the theater's library, he began designing the lighting for many stage productions that were produced throughout the school year. At age 16 he formed his first lighting company, and began performing production services for community groups, restaurants, and schools in his area. Michael went on to study theatre arts and lighting design in college.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.


I grew up in Southern California and started in school working in theatre mostly as a lighting designer. In the early eighties I did Summer Stock Theatre then started working for an LA rental company doing mostly live music and tours.  In the nineties I moved to Hollywood any befriended cinematographers which led to lighting for film.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for Gaffing?

I realized it when I stepped on to my first major studio movie set. It was Terminator 2.

3. What are your hobbies and interests?

My hobbies mostly rely on Art, Music, Travel, Off-Roading, Mountain Biking, Nature, Food and Wine.

4. What has been your biggest learning from your job?

 I don’t know about that much as I once thought that I did!

5. What are the important skills one should have to be a successful Gaffer?

Show up, suit up, and participate. Enjoy and be happy from your core. Have clear intention and deliver excellence at all times.

6. How do you plan to take your career forward?

My idea is to Continue developing strong connections and relationships into the future.
