Jolanda - You Kind of Have to Grow Into a Lioness Being a Young Self Employed Woman (Lifestyle Photographer)

Jolanda

Photography gives me the opportunity to combine so many different passions in one form of art, which is probably why it’s been such a big part of my life for so many years.

1. Tell us about your background and journey?

I’ve always been interested in all different kinds of art ever since I’ve been very young, starting with acting and writing. I feel like it just comes naturally to me, expressing myself in that way.

Photography gives me the opportunity to combine so many different passions in one form of art, which is probably why it’s been such a big part of my life for so many years.

2. What inspired you to pursue photography?

There was a time in middle school when I felt very lonely. I spent a lot of time on tumblr back then and found this group of teenagers from Utah who were always traveling to the mountains to take creative photos together.

They seemed so passionate about it and just had a lot of fun. When I started taking self portraits myself it completely changed how I perceived myself and the world around me and I’m really thankful for that.

3. How would you describe your style in photography?

Something like cinematic vintage daydream - my photography is like a small world that I created to which anyone who wants to can escape for a while. My photos definitely have an escapism component for sure.

4. What is the most challenging part of working as a photographer?

You kind of have to grow into a lioness being a young self employed woman. You have to learn to stop trying to please everyone and find your own way. This can be difficult sometimes when you grow up in a society where women are taught they’re supposed to make everyone around them happy all the time.

5. Which subjects or frames attract you the most?

History has always fascinated me. I’ve always loved looking through photo albums from my family or buying old furniture pieces, basically anything that tells a story. I try to incorporate that into my portraiture. Some people have told me my photos remind them of old renaissance paintings which seems accurate haha.

6. Who is your favorite photographer and why?

Elle-May Watson inspires me with everything she does. She really has mastered dynamic vintage photography and her style of editing is divine.

7. What tips would you give to aspiring photographers?

Try yourself out as much as possible and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. In the beginning, not every idea or concept is going to work out but you’re growing with every experience.

It happens to all of us. Figure out who you are and what you bring to the table. I believe that everyone has something important to tell the world. Find your voice and then sing it out.

8. Which is your favorite book and why?

Tough one. The book thief by Markus Zusak really stuck with me over the years. Historical novel – who would have guessed.
