Corrin - Even Though I Find Joy In Creating, The Real Reason I Love Making Cakes Is The Smiles They Bring (Self-Taught Cake Decorator)

Corrin

People often use cake to celebrate or express gratitude and I’m so grateful to be a part of that. Also, cakes are always teaching me life lessons, like “perfection” is never achieved, but you can still find the beauty in simple. Or Sometimes simple is stunning.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am a self-taught cake decorator. I first discovered my love of creating through cake when my daughter asked for a fancy unicorn birthday cake. It was a new challenge that took me out of my comfort zone. I used to work full time in Human Resources, Programming, and now a Preschool Teacher.

I had no formal training for cakes. However , A parent later request one for their child and it grew from there! Initially I received 1-2 orders a month, and now I have several orders every week.

2. How did you come up with this idea and go about executing it?

I have spent countless hours learning from tutorials and from the friends I've made along the way. My favorite way to decorate is to use or reuse the things I have. I save decor, plants from walks, or even sometimes something we were going to thrown away and save it to try to make something new for a cake.

By using what I have, I’ve created cakes that people have never seen before. Instead of using the traditional way and tools, I’ve been able to find new ways to do the same techniques.

3. Do you often need to upskill yourself?

Yes, there are always changes in cake trends. The beauty of it is you always get to create. One skill I’ve taught myself is Isomalt/sugarwork. Although I’ve watched many tutorials, my favorite way to learn is try something new.

I have studied technique and I’m never afraid to try. Sometimes it works, takes a few tries, or it never works out, but I never give-up. I now am receiving more and more orders and all my practice has helped me complete their orders.

4. What has been your greatest takeaways in your career?

Even though I find joy in creating, the real reason I love making cakes is the smiles they bring!

People often use cake to celebrate or express gratitude and I’m so grateful to be a part of that. Also, cakes are always teaching me life lessons, like “perfection” is never achieved, but you can still find the beauty in simple. Or Sometimes simple is stunning.

I would also express to anyone who wants to try cakes or anything new, to just go for it. I never knew that this would become a successful venture when I first started. But I still started- and that’s the important part. Just try.

5. Where does your inspiration lie?

I am most often inspired by nature and gardens. I love more of the neutral colors and rustic Boho vibe. I often get imagines in my head when I’m out in nature. Other times I’ve inspired by a color scheme.

Sometimes I try to make it right away, but often I think about how I can create that vision. My favorite creations have come from trying to create something beautiful I’ve never seen before. I always want to be inventive so that cakes really can become a form of art and expression.

6. How do you plan to take your career forward?

My next benchmark is to do more and learn more about Wedding cakes. I’ve made a few and I have a schedule and I can’t wait to see where this new challenge takes me. I also love to collaborate with others. I’ve joined with a few companies to find amazing products and find fun stencils.

I also love collaborating with other cakers. There are so many talented people around the world and but just sharing ideas and coming together to celebrate themes, I’ve made many international friends and learned so much.
